S80 ABS/DSTC noise on hard turn

I have a UK S80 year 2000 with 118k miles.
In the last week I have experienced rasping noise when turning left as far as the steering will go, and also when turning back to the right to straighten up. This does not occur when the car is going straight, or when small steering movements are made.

My local garage, (not a Volvo dealer), said it sounded like an ABS noise, and sure enough, when turning the car to the left in a continuous circle the noise stops the moment you touch the brakes as lightly as you can, and returns when you lift your foot from the brakes.
I later discovered that if I switch off the traction control (DSTC/STC), the noise also stops completely.

The guy there checked the brakes, disc backing plates, steering and suspension and said that everything is perfectly OK. His advice is to ignore it.

So my question is:

Has anyone else encountered this ABS/traction control problem, and if so, did you find a (preferably inexpensive) solution?

Thanks very much :-)

I took my car to the local Volvo dealer and they called me to say that I needed a new ABS module at a fitted price of £1650 !!!! (2,400 US dollars).
I told them to forget it, however when I picked up the car they mentioned that the driver side front ABS ring (rotor) was corroded and broken.
I got my local garage to replace it at half the price that the Volvo dealer wanted, and now all is well :-)

Clarification

Just to clarify my last post.
In fact the Volvo dealer was completely wrong about needing a new £1650 fitted ABS module.

My local garage simply fitted a new ABS ring at a cost of £70 which solved the problem I'm very happy to say :-) The Volvo dealer wanted £150 to do the same thing.

The thing that really annoys me is that only the Volvo dealer could read the ABS module diagnostic codes, my local garage couldn't, so they could tell me anything they wanted.
Also my local garage tells me that there are a lot of jobs that can only be done by Volvo dealers as in some cases particular modules of the car's electronics will only work with Volvo dealer equipment. I don't think my next car will be a Volvo.......
