S80 Squeaky Steering Wheel

All,

The past few days, I seem to have developed a squeaky wheel. (no pun intended and it's not my wife either!)

When I turn the wheel, I get a high pitched but not loud squeak in the wheel. Additionally, I haven't had high beams for a long time, they come on when you pull the turn signal stalk but don't stay on, so I guess I'm fixing both issues at the same time.

I've pulled steering wheels before, but not with air bags. Any advice is appreciated.

thanks!

(forgot to mention that it's a 2000 s80 T6)

Does it sound like its in the wheel or from under the dash?
What position is the headlight switch in?
All the way to the right for the highbeams to stay on.

Tech,

I'm pretty sure that the sound is coming from the column near where the wheel bolts on. I just figured there was something typical. Any ideas?

Also, with the highbeams, I can pull the stalk all the way towards me and hold the brights on, but when I release it, they go off. I'm not sure it has ever worked since we've owned the car. I always figured some plastic piece was broken.

Thanks.

Anything else not working right?
Wipers, blinkers ?

Try spraying some silicon behind the steering wheel.

Everything else works fine, just the brights. they work, they just don't stay on.

Will try the silicone, any ideas with the brights would be appreciated.

You do have the switch all the way to the right correct?
It won't go into Highbeams it the switch is on Daytime running lights.

Since the lamps are always on, I NEVER turn the headlight switch. Sheesh. I'm almost embarassed. Hopefully the silicone works...

thanks.

RE: S80 Squeaky Steering Wheel

As a final update, I found the "squeaky" culprit. It was not coming from the wheel itself, but from the column where it goes into the engine compartment. There is a molded rubber piece that surounds part of the column that (of course) turns when you turn the wheel. That piece of rubber was causing the squeak, just needed a bit of grease and all is well.

It was a very high pitched, low volume squeak that would just drive you insane. Thank you all for your help.

Glad you found it that was the next place I was going to tell you to go.
