S80 T6 (or not)

Hi there,

I previously had an S70 which I was happy with, except the enginecould use a bit more powerfor the size of the car (only 168HP). Now I am looking at either '03 S80 T6 or '04 S80 AWD.
I am not that much impressed by AWD features in general, so that is more of perk for me. What I am looking for is a SAFE, reliable and powerful enough car so that I do not step on the gas and read the news before it picks up (not a racer, but like to drive a good car).

So, I guess the question is which one is better or at least the pros and cons for each - I know 2004 meant a lot of changes for S80, but I cannot find a T6 from that year to fit into my budget (
other options for the samebudget would be '02 MB E320, '02 MB E430 and '03 A6 Quattro 4.2).

I appreciate comments and also any hint with regards to what to look for when buying.

Regards,
G

from all those cars you listed i would suggest the a6, a very nice respected car and a powerful naturally aspirated engine. the s80s have so many problems, i own one myself and its a constant headache. although the t6 is a very quick car i would prefer the audi

I am on my 2nd t6, and have never had a major problem. Many members complain about mechanical problems however. I love the car and have over 150K t6 miles behind me. The one thing I will recommend is to buy from a dealer with a warranty. The dealers kiss your behind when Volvo corporate is paying for the repairs.

Why not look for a turboed S70?

GLT = The LPT (Low Pressure Turbo)
T5 = The HPT (High Pressure Turbo)

I guess the main issuewith S70 is that it does not have curtain airbags - had a rollover with my previous one and did not appreciate the lack of it. Other than that, it has a very good frame.

S80 T6 (or not)

Hello all,
I'm new to this forum. I currently own a saab 93 conv. My wife ( who totes the kids around most of the time) has just killed our chevy SUV. I have to get a new car ASAP for her. My cousin is willing to give me his 1999 S80 T6 with 190k mi. He has admitted that he has had serious tranny issues. He had to replace it about 60k mi. ago. Today it has issues with the gears. He explains that it doesnt drive correctly untill it hits about 3rd meanning it might still have some tranny issues. he also believes that there might be an O2 sensor out as well. Considering that he is giving me this car, I feel like I shouldnt be so choosy. I am getting it for free. I estimate putting about $2500 into repairs to have it really road ready for her. Am I being realistic with this figure? I own a saab, so i am no stranger to more than average repair costs. This is my first encounter with a Volvo. I have read up on this model and read a lot of good things about it. It also has a nice bold look without being too overwhelming. A nice family car. Should I go through with it? Or would you say it sounds like the car is a money pit and would be a waste of time and my money.

I would say to go for the 2004 S80 2.5T AWD. The 2.5T engine has been developed over a long period of time by Volvo (2.3T to 2.4T to finally 2.5T) and has been available in just about every recent Volvo model and has been quite reliable. Ditto for the AWD system as its the modified Haldex system used in the XC70.

If its a CPO car; then go for it and your backside will be covered. If its not a CPO car; I would still go for it over the others on your list.

so this is related but somewhat unrelated, don't some newer S70's have an improved side bag that coves the head of the driver and pass? I can't find very much info on this, what was the cutoff?
