serpentine belt q's
 

Hello all I am a newbie to Volvos, but not to working on cars. I have a 2010 s80 t6 awd, this engine is a weird beast. My q's is geared toward the serpentine belt. the car has a tick over 105K miles so I figured I would jump in and replace the belt, when I looked over the engine to see how difficult the job would be I noticed some things that looked a little out of the ordinary compared to other cars. first the serpentine belt is on the driver side, it doesn't go around all components it seems like it only goes around the a/c compressor, the power steering pump and a shaft for the alternator. Why does it not go around a crankshaft dampener? I know this engine does not have a timing belt I was informed it has a timing chain which is a lot better then a belt. If anyone has seen this serpentine belt set up do I have to remove the p/s pump hoses to get the belt off? from what I have seen just on the surface (I haven't ripped anything apart yet and really looked into it) it looks as if you do. any input or suggestions are appreciated. thanks in advanced.

Correct, the belt is on the driver's side. It runs the compressor, power steering and water pump. The water pump and power steering use the same pulley. It is driven by the pulley you mention for the alternator. There is a housing on the engine block called the READ (Rear Engine Accessory Drive). This is a gear to gear drive from the flexplate. Under the intake, the pulley drives a small belt that drives the alternator. On the other side (under the compressor) is the pulley for the serpentine belt.

Yes, you have to remove the power steering pump to replace the serpentine belt.

thanks for reply, I was wondering where the water pump was. at first glance it looked like I had to do something with the power steering pump. looks like it'll be a Saturday or sunday morning job.

The pulley you see for the power steering pump is connected to the power steering pump. If you look closely, you'll see two T25 screws on the pulley. This holds the water pump drive portion to the inside of the power steering pump pulley. So they are both driven from there.
