RE: spark plug info

I have heard you just leave the gap at what it was set at by the factory. I didn't change the gap on mine. The book value for the torque is 22 ft-lb. here is a how-to: http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for...9deb161e38c6b6

From online Volvo manual:

Spark plug gap: 0.028-0.032" (0.7-0.8 mm)

Tightening torque: 18.4 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)

What brand of plugs did you get? Just curious.

RE: spark plug info

The ones in the Volvo package for my 2.9L non-turbo are just rebranded Bosch. I put Bosch Platinum Ir Fusion plugs in mine instead. You don't have to set the gap on any of multi-electrode plugs either. Apparently the distance is optimized and set at the factory. I've been told you shouldn't use plats with turbos though. Don't know why as I've never owned a turbo.

Cool, I was just curious. Last time I changed mine I used NGK just because where I work I get a discount on them:)

RE: spark plug info

can i use NGK platinums on my 99 S80T6 ? i used NGK plats on my 97 maxima cause they were recommended and i was really happy with them

i hate bosch plugs

RE: spark plug info

Well, the Volvo package explicitly states S80 non-turbo models only. And if you use the plug finder on Bosch's web site they don't recommend plat plugs for the T6 either. So I wouldn't if I were you... but it's your car.

RE: spark plug info

ok , i dont mind using copper plugs, but can the be NGK only ?

what is actually recommended for the 99 S80T6 ?

RE: spark plug info

Well the OEM T-6 Volvo plugs are Bosch Platinum plugs with Volvo's name stamped on them.

I made the BIG mistake of putting in the NEW Pulstar plugs into my 01 S80 and I actually dropped gas millage by about 3 to 4 Miles Per Gallon..I immediately put in the Volvo plugs again..it didn't like them at all...Buyer Beware on the PULSTAR Plugs..they are advertised in Popular Science and Popular Mechanics Magazines..with a bunch of BS...

Note it says clearly on the package, excluding turbo models.

Oh, and here is the link to Bosch's website. http://www.boschautoparts.com/Products/SparkPlugs/

If you use their part find it'll tell you not to use plats too.

Thats funny your link didn't work but I just looked up plugs through the site for a S80T-6 turbo motor the 1st 2 parts were platinum plugs.

OEM Volvo plugs are bosch platinums.

The Non-turbo motors don't use platinums they use the regular plug with the 4 prongs. The pic you have above is only for the Non-turbo motors. Also alot of shops put the platinums on the Non-turbo motors and never have problems either.

RE: spark plug info

the 4 prong bosch plugs were proven to be crap, spark takes the path of least resistance thus it does nto travel through all 4 prongs, just one of them...wasted money

i cant come to the idea of using bosch plugs , heard so many bad things about them... NGK plats are solid plugs, but i guess they would have to be re-gapped since they're not oem equivalent

Crito 01-25-2009 06:21 PM

RE: spark plug info

The one the dealer put in were three prong, which are just regular Bosch plats I think, same as in package pictured above. The four prong ones are the Ir Fusions I put in. Bosch site still doesn't recommend plats for the 2.9 turbo... dunno why they do for the 2.8. Anywho, I've been very happy with them in my non-turbo 2.9, quadruple redundant prongs and all. ;)

Here's the Volvo branded ones I pulled out and replacement plugs I bought on ebay (cheap).

I put the same Bosch IR fusion plugs on my 2.9 S80, no issues... I felt an immediate difference over the volvos, but possibly only due to those being a bit worn..

RE: spark plug info

Supposedly the iridium makes them "feel" like new plugs longer. Figured they were worth a try anyways... guess I'll know for sure in about 30K miles ;)

Same goes, I have only put on about 5000 miles since the change so I really wouldnt know until a few years later.. hopefully, with the exception of oil changes, I dont have any maintainance to really take care of for another 25k...
