SRS airbag service urgent

Hi,

Having a problem with this SRS message. I cant get an inspection sticker until this thing is off, and its causing me massive headaches and wasted time.I searched for SRS on these forumsand read some stuff, but I have some more specifics and hopefully can get a more specific answer.

Volvo wanted $110 just to "diagnose" the problem, prolly stick the SRS reader on there or whatever, and "go from there". The light just came on out of the blue a few months ago, and I didnt think toomuch about it. So, needing the inspection sticker,I took it to a local mechanic who was going to try to clear the code for me, and gave me an estimate of 80 bucks to get the SRS code and try to reset it. He tried a few times over an hour or so timeframe, but no luck. Gave me a "discount" of 40 bucks, but also gave me the code.

His SRS reader said "SRS code 115" (may have been 1-1-5), "internal fault". I called volvo dealership back and asked them if I gave them a code they could give me an estimate. They claim they need to diagnose it themselves, which is going to set me back $110, plus the $40 I already spent, and who knows how much thereafter.

Anyways, does anyone know what the 115 code means, and/or if there are any temporary solutions to clearing the light, even if only for an hour or one start. My main concern is the inspection sticker so that I can get the registration and insurance for the car, and ill fix the actual problem later if need be.

Any help would be massively appriciated. Ive gotten great help from here before, such a good forum.

Thanks in advance.

Ok...so you're getting an airbag failure light and you'll "fix it later if need be". You bought one of the safest cars on the road and the airbags are part of the safety. There is no guarantee they will deploy with a fault code like that (internal error).

I guess, for the original $80.00 quote the local shop was giving you, why you didn't go to the dealership for $30.00 more. Its unlikely with complicated electronics like an airbag system that a local shop will be able to handle the repair, outside maybe throwing parts at it, especially with a Volvo.

I guess I'm coming of harsh, but I'd knock this one up as a lesson learned and take it to the dealership to get some real diagnostics done. There is more to providing a diagnosis then just plugging in a computer for a code.

I dont mind your "harshness", but just to clarify a few things.

I was looking for a short term fix so I could get the inspection sticker in the next day or two. If I went to the dealership, I needed an appointment, which I could only get the next week, or drop the car off with no loaner (which I couldnt do I needed the car). I meant if there was actually a problem I would fix it when I could get around to it or drop the car off. Its not that I dont take the problem, and safety, seriously.

Second, the local guy said he would charge $80 to read and clear the SRS service light. Volvo wanted $110 just to read the SRS system, and then presumably much more to "go from there". If the local guy did what he said he would do for $80 bucks, its clearly the right move. He couldnt do what he said he could, despite trying, and cut the price.

The dealership can be very expensive, so I try to avoid them whenever I can. For example, they wanted aprx $300 bucks to change my power steering reservior. I got the parts for $65 bucks and changed it myself in less than 30 minutes, having never done it before. Surely they do it in like 15 minutes. And they want $300. They wanted $250 to change one of my tie rods, probably $500 for both of them. Never having changed a tie-rod, I bought the parts for $40 each, and changed the first one in 30 minutes and the second in 15 minutes. Saved about $400+. Surely they do it even faster. That just annoys me how much money they charge. They would probably want big bucks to replace a sensor, fix a wireor something like that. Sorry for the short rant, its just annoying they charge so much because most people cant/wont service their own cars. (PS - dont take this the wrong way, I respect mechanic's ability tremendously, I just think it can be very price for service).

Anyways, back on topic. Ive been busy, andstill havent remedied the problem. I cant seem to find any sort of airbag wiring/sensor charts/diagrams online, and Id like to inspect them myself before forcing myself to pay big bucks at the dealership. Might just be a bad sensor or faulty wiring that I could fix myself. If anyone has pictures or something for this it would be immensely appriciated.

SRS-115 is a code for the SRS control module internal fault.

That means the SRS crash sensor is bad.(Usually) The crash sensor is under the center console.
But when a new one is installed software needs to be downloaded from the dealer to make it work.

i had this happen to me after installing my alpine cd/mp3 deck and to get rid of the msg off the display just hit the msg button and it will take you back to how much gas you have in the car but the triangle will still be there. I took it to a volvo specialist and they charged me 30 to reprogram instead of 120 the dealer was asking for it took 5 minutes.

Exactly my problem - had to diconnect the Centre console and radio to install a new 'Cupholder' - Silly me did not disconnect the Neg connector from the battery 1st like the install instructions said to. Now I have a nice new cupholder installed and a bright new yellow warning light and 'SRS airbag service urgent' message.

So I guess they is no easy reset and have to take the car back to the dealer eh???

Here is a link to get the tool to clear your SRS Urgent Warning light..Great for people who forget to DIS-CONNECT the NEG side of the battery...It's a little pricey..but worth every penney...

They have a scanner here to cover almost every VOLVO out there...

Thanks for the link Air Force Rascal, but which AutoScanner does the Volvo S60 Airbag Reset (there's a large assortment of scanners) - is it the PPC by BSR for Volvos? Your right $190 is a bit steep but I'm sure this scanner will pay for itself in no time ;o)

Cheers,
Chuck

robnov; you should have dealt with the issue when it first arose, not when you need insurance renewed or whatever and cant pass safety , who drives with an airbag light and thinks "ill fix it later" ??

what if the bags pop in your face would you like to replace them each at over 1000 dollars per side ?

anyways should have gone to the dealer and paid the 110 diagnostics fee and got the right code and the meaning of it, you were saving what ...30 dollars by paying 80 to a mech ( i know he charged you 40 but you went in thinking of paying 80) thats rediculous cheapness if you ask me ,, anyways - enjoy your unsafe volvo

They have one on there that says it's specifically for Volvo.....mine is a PPC..also, read about it on their website..it is for Volvo..but NOT ALL Volvos..depends what model and year you have. You can call them they will tell you whether it will work for your Volvo or not, before you order.

Good Luck

take car to dealer $20 for software update $100 for lobor/download

RE: SRS airbag service urgent

The only reason I would recommend getting your own scanner..is because you only have to forget dis-connecting your battery negative lead about 2 or 3 times and you've paid for the scanner of your own by paying some dealership to clear it for you. Plus all the time and trouble of waiting at the dealership etc.

For what it's worth, I made this same mistake. Posted a wanted ad on craigslist, and a local independent shop did it for $20. Took him all of 30 seconds.

stojakovic 07-13-2009 01:35 PM

I have a 97 850 GLT with SRS staying on. This model is sort of nightmare to clear SRS code by DIY.

A local guy charge $50 to clear it (lifetime? He promised at least.) His tool is from Europe and he claims it costs him $4000.

service repair led to SRS urgent message

I had my passenger seat and floor upholstery removed because of a water leak through the passenger door. The leak is fixed, the uphoslstery is dry and smells almost like new, and now the SRS urgent service message appeared. Could the repair have caused this, or is it just coincidence? Btw, I don't believe in coincidences.

stojakovic 07-15-2009 01:33 PM

Probably. There are many points in air bag system that will cause SRS on, due to detection of circuit break or so.

If you did not disconnect battery when removing seats, then you may trigger the SRS. Have someone read your air bag code. If it is circuit break, you may just clear it and see if it come on again. If not, then you are all set.

srs urgent

I have a similar SRS urgent message and took the car to a dealer. I was told the message was related to the warning light in some way and would not stay cleared. They wanted $100 more to complete the diagnosis and any additional funds necessary to fix any problem discovered. An earlier response was right on with quoted high prices for repairs. The dealer could not tell me that the uregnt warning was a warning light problem and the SRS would work as it should. The dealer was also not too worried about sending me out the door with a car that may no longer be safe. They really did not seem interested in fixing what was conveyed as a mystery to track down and seemed only interested in the work to fix any problem if they were given an open ended account at the high shop prices.

It appears that something is consistently occuring with this warning system, other than breaking the circuit and needing to reset the message code. As I stated, the dealer cleared the message a number of times, but it would return when the car was started again.

Is there any wisdom about the SRS system that I could bring to the dealer and avoid needless expense?
