Strange noise when turning right sometimes

Once in a while (like once or twice every month or so) when I turn right at slow speeds, but not from a full stop I get a brief noise (it lasts about 1 second). It is clearly audible but not load. It sounds like a coil spring unwinding or an soft phone ringing or sort of like a tape measure being released but clearer. I think it is coming from either the radio/ac area or the shifter area. It will do it a few times and I can not make it occur except on those drives were it happens. Then if I keep doing right hand turns sometimes I might get it to make the noise once or twice with say six turns. Then it goes away for days, weeks or months. It does not appear to be a function of outside tempurature or if the car is hot or cold.

Other than this the car runs fine. I am mostly curious as to what it might be.

when you first mentioned turning my first thought was the steering stops being worn or gone, and the tyres rubbing on the wheel well.. unlikely this is it but it came to mind..

Surely you have checked your power steering fluid level ? Low level will produce strange noises.

PS fluid is fine. It is a real clear metal spring type sound. Like something is sticking then releases. It is gone now and probably will be for a few weeks then ring or wing or what ever a few times then gone again.
