Tech - question on ETM
 

I own a 2000 S80 T6 w/ 80,000m. I've noticed lately that when coming to a stop the idle, which normally slows to about 700 rpm, actually dips briefly to 500 rpm and then back to 700 rpm. The instrument panel and headlights dim as well. Twice (once at a drive thru and once in a parking lot) the car actually stalled when coming to a stop. From what I've read in the forums these are symptoms of the throttle control getting gummed up or going bad (e.g. the Volvo recall coming soon). My Volvo repair guy (not a dealer) is very reputable and has done good work for me in the past. He says that the first thing I'll have to do is get the throttle control cleaned before I can even think of having the dealer replace the etm (as part of the upcoming "extended warranty"). Is this true - should I spend some money to have it cleaned first or should I march straight to the dealer and demand its replacement?

You need to have it cleaned first. If not they will clean it and charge you for it.

Half of the time cleaning fixes it and the other it doesn't.
