Throttle body question

are the sensors in the throttle body removable or does the entire unit need to be changed if a sensor goes bad. Volvo just charged my father $1000 to change out his throttle body when all that was wrong was the TPS. Does this make sence?

RE: Throttle body question

If you have an electronic throttle body, then the entire unit must be replaced as it is not 'serviceable'.

RE: Throttle body question

Some S80s need an ETM replacement around (or even before) 100k miles.

RE: Throttle body question

The throttle body's are not servicable.

Tell him to have it cleaned about every 20,000 and it will last alot longer.

RE: Throttle body question

There were only 70K on this car.. dealer serviced since new.
Thats a crappy design isnt it?
Does volvo do this on purpose?

RE: Throttle body question

Rejeep, it (Volvo) may well have been "dealer serviced" but I will bet you that the ETM was never cleaned such as TECH suggested. There are a zillion posts on this forum re: the ETM and by reading them you should get the big picture on this faulty part.

RE: Throttle body question

Well, I've just had to have mine replaced at 64k miles at a cost of $905.33.

There is an NHTSA investigation ongoing on this defective unit from Volvo
and the NHTSA asked me to send them the defective unit after the dealer
installed the new unit and a copy of the work order invoice.

Keep your receipts .......there's a very good chance this will be a recall.

I heard something about a class-action lawsuit. However, I may be mistaken.

To all with the VOLVO ETM flu:

For a complete description of the problem, how the ETM is built, a typical failure analysis, FAQ and information for the dealer go to http://vexedvolvo.org. Click on the TV link to see a 6 minute TV investigative report.

If you want to be on my mailing list of 300 VEXED Warriors in 15 countries send your name, country, car model, mileage and general description of your situation to VEXEDvolvo@comcast.net.

The TV report has shown in Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles and Boston. I am working with BBC in London and another TV station in Washington DC. There is a list on the FAQ page as to where to sent complaints. My contact at the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is still collecting complaints. Nick is doing great things in spreading the word in Australia.

I will keep you e-mail address private and only sent updates by BBC (blind copy).
