timing belt

Is there a DIY for replacing the timing belt, tensioner, idle etc for a 2000 volvo s80? Pictures would be preferred.

RE: timing belt

I was actually looking for one with a little bit more pictures if possible. I am interested in doing this so what is the best place to buy the whole kit (timing belt, tensioner, idle) online or can I buy it at a local car store like Murray's?

Maybe the overseas haynes manual has it? Not sure...

What specifically are you looking for?

Have you ever taken on a car repair this large? You can really mess up your car's engine if you mess this up.

RE: timing belt

I think I will take it to a service, I don't want to risk damaging anything. Can regular car services do it or does it have to be a volvo dealership?

It doesn't have to a Volvo dealership, but you'll definately want to take it to someone that is familiar with major engine repairs rather then just a place like PepBoys, Midas or the like. I'd probably stay with at least a European specialist for repairs.

Where are you located? There may be places that local folks will recommend to you...

Well, I don't think a road trip is going to happen, Nertil, apologies... anyone in the area that can recommend a shop?

Ok guys I found a volvo dealership and they told me 545+tax for the timing belt and the tensioner. What do you guys think?

Make sure they do the idler pulley (roller) as well... that is a good price, agreed.

I asked them about it an they said they do not. Is it really that important?

RE: timing belt

It turns out that the previous owner had already replaced the timing belt, idle and tensioner this year before he sold it to the dealer where I bought it from. There is still kind of a rubbing noise coming from the engine and the dealership told me it is the auxiliary belt and he said that he can replace it for 175. Would it be easier/cheaper for me to change it myself or should I let the dealer do it?

P.S. Where is this belt located?

thanks
nertil

RE: timing belt

The auxillary belt is also called a serpentine belt. It's not hard to change, just a tight fit. If you have patience, this is definately something that can be done by someone who a basic tool kit. You just have to make sure you route the belt properly.

You won't damage anything if its installed wrong, well besides possibly the new belt, but its not going to cause engine damage.

RE: timing belt

Is that the belt that can be seen on the left side of the engine?

tenchu 05-05-2008 09:43 PM

RE: timing belt
