Timing belt help please
Hello, I'm a new member and have a 2000 S 80 T6. I've read and searched for several hours regarding timing belt replacement but cannot come up with DIY instructions. The car has 69000 miles and after reading this forum sounds like it should be replaced. I've replaced many TB's on VW TDI's and other 4cyl OHV engines but not a Volvo or one with dual cams. I can't seem to find a service manual either. I enjoy wrenching on my cars, I guess pride of ownership or something. Don't mind buying specific tools if necessary to avoid the dealer. I feel the dealer has screwed me several times and I don't want to bring it there for this service. Seems like the check engine, DTC, or service engine light is on quite a bit costing $1000 nearly every time I bring it to the dealer. Apologize for the long post but would appreciate any help. Honestly I've tried the search function prior to asking these questions.

RE: Timing belt help please
It is very tight to work on the S80 for the timing belt.
But overall it really isn't all that bad. The worse thing is removing all the turbo piping and all the covers to get to the timing belt. When doing the timing belt the most important thing is to mark the cam pulleys to the head before removing the belt or even loosing the tensioner. |
RE: Timing belt help please
Thanks for the reply. My main question is the cvvt mechanism. I'm not sure my car has it. I've read not to use cam sprocket locks if this mechanism is present. Any advise how to set the cvvt during the change?
Thanks Tony |
RE: Timing belt help please
If you mark the sprockets to a spot on the cam cover you will be fine.
When the belt comes off the VVT can move but as long as you have your mark on the cam cover and the one on the pulley lined up you will be fine. |

Hi, I asked this on a previous thread. Are there marks on the cams and crank already? Thanx

RE: Timing belt help please
There is marks but they are a little hard to see.

RE: Timing belt help please
The marks are very, very, slight on the pulleys -- you'd have a better reference in marking the pulleys to the cam cover as Tech stated.
