Timing belt parts questions - 99 T6
Can somebody please look over the parts I am looking to order to do my timing belt. I have searched the forums for a couple days now and still am not confident I have the right parts down.
First off it is for my 1999 S80 T6, that I just picked up with approx 108K and has not had the timing belt replaced. I want to get this done ASAP! I don’t want to miss anything. I was going to order from www.europartsdirect.com but I wasn’t sure exactly what parts I needed and it looks as if this Ebay kit would be cheaper. Europartsdirect has the following parts listed for a 99 T6: - timing belt tensioner roller $78.08 - timing belt tensioner $136.68 - timing belt idler roller $47.92 - timing belt $36.55 Do I need all 4 of the above parts or only the 3 in the Ebay kit? Is there anything I am missing? Any seals or gaskets? Any better place to get the parts from? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get the job done right! |
Parts to do Timing belt change
When I had mine done, I bought the parts from a Volvo Dealer in the US and had them installed by a Volvo dealer in Canada. The parts were much cheaper in the US. I had the water pump done at the same time because the labour to do it would be the same if it failed in the near future.
The parts thus were: Timing belt part#272386 Volvo price US$64.94 Coolant(water) pump Volvo part#8694627 US$170.28 Idler roller/pulley part#8692561 US$43.11 Tension pulley part#9180687 US$102.81 Damping element part#9207900 US$116.74 So looks like you are doing a lot better on pricing than I did. i.e. Your total US$299.23 versus US$327.60 for my dealer pricing. Here is what I got and where I got it when I did my 2000 t6. Worked flawlessly.
The parts will be exactly the same for your 99. Good luck. Obviously you don't NEED the thermostat, or the oil filter. |

Just my 2 cents but I don't think you really need to change the cam and crank seals unless they're leaking. Even the water pump is probably still fine.

Thanks for the info, I am not replacing those seals unless necessary. I did order a H2O pump though. I found a new OEM on Ebay for $56 so I figured it was cheap enough security.

I am still waiting on my water pump to get here. I have 107,7XX miles on my S80 running the original timing belt. I just picked up the car last week and its been parked most of the time because I am concerned it may snap after seeing Tech’s timing belt post. Do you think this is rational? I guess I feel since I have another vehicle to drive its cheap insurance to let it sit until I can have the belt replaced and not risk having to replace the engine….But its just so tempting to drive….

Better safe than out a whole wack of cash! I had about 106,000 on mine when I changed it and it didn't look that bad, however the idler pulley didn't look so hot and had that seized it would have been the end. The pulley is supposed to be changed at 80,000 miles and I'm sure no one ever does them unless they're doing a timing belt as well. So both your pulley and your belt are overdue. If it was mine I would definitely park it if I didn't have to drive it!
