Tire psi?
What are you guys running?
On the fuel door it seems like there is two recommendations... 39psi or 29psi. I don't have passengers in my car often. The tires that are on there now are 215 55 16s with a max of 44psi. at 33psi it feels like they are over inflated... the car wonders a bit. The suspension components are all in perfect shape. Just had the car on the lift and did a full under inspection. Tie rods, ball joints, sway bar links, control arms, every bushing is fine. So I lowered them down to 29.5 cold and the car seems to be alot more stable. SO my question is why the hell would the recommend 39psi? I mean that changes the driving characteristics quite a bit... It would be a crappy ride and harder to control right? Thanks for your thoughts, Jonathan |
to be honest, I have found the opposite with my Yokohama AS-430's, the more pressure you give it, the more grip and control I seem to get..
Underinflate and it feels pretty lame when flooring it through corners.. I normally run pretty high pressures 36-38 or so, even when I don't have a full car.. just easier than being underinflated when i have 5 people with me. The higher pressure does tend to give a rougher ride though |
I ran 45psi in my Michelins. they gave a little harder ride but I increased .2mpg. Not a HUGE difference, but a difference nonetheless. I think about 32 is the lowest you should go on these. They say optional is 29, and will give a nice smooth ride, but you can get more tire wear, and drop mpg quickly, not to mention the cornering suffers.

39 sounds a lot.. The 15 inch wheels I had on my 850 I belive were 32 psi. When I got the Volans put on about a month ago (Yokohama Avus 215/45/17) by Tire Kingdom to run 35 PSI..

Keep in mind my car has the option 225/50/R17's not the 16"

I run 35 in both my 16" studless winters and my 17" summers. 29 was too soft and 39 too hard. I get much better tire life too. I ran 29 in my first set of 17's a few years ago and the tires only lasted 12K miles. I'm now at 12 with my new set and have plenty of tread left.

Well I went up to 37 cold today and... I like it. For city driving that is. When I'm on a long stretch of highway at 70+MPH its too.... solid. If that makes any sense. Steering is too sensitive and more body role.
However around town the cornering is ALOT better. I think I'll keep it like this unless Im going on a road trip again and I'll go down to 31 or so. Thanks for the help guys! |
