TIRE RECOMMENDATIONS
 

Need to replace tires on my 2002 S80 with 57,300 miles for the 3rd time. Currently have Mastercraft Avenger bald with less than 24,000.

I have a 2000 S80 T-6 and need to replace the tires (225-50 17), any recommendations? I really would not like to spend over $200/ tire....

the recommended tire was Bridgestone. is this still the thought, or are there others that will get safe handling and good wear.

also, what about replacing V with H as the only long distance driving i do is aboutthree or four timesyearly on the interstate and we know we don't do 140.

I personally use Yokohama AS-430's on my S80 2.9l I paid about 135 each and they are rated temp A, traction AA and treadwear 600....

Also consider what size rims your s80 has... mine has the 225 50 17's from the t6 so that will affect my choice of tire obviously..
What does your car have?

Generally from what I know, the cheaper tyre options on the car are brands like Sumitomo, Kumho and Yokohama all of which I rate well, particularly the Yoko's.. Brands like Falken and Hankook are also pretty good if you can find them.. even cheaper than the yoko's and sumitomos.. Just look around and see what you can find

spend a bit more money and get a good tire for your needs, also I rotate every oil change, add a balance every other oil change, I do the oil at 3000 miles, maybe its overkill but my saab 9000 has 170,000, my peugeot 505 has 160,000, my '78 VW camper bus has 179,000, my mercedes e-320 has 134,000, my volvo s80 has 124,000, oh I forgot the daughters 2000 ford taurus has 133,000miles, I try real hard to take care of my fleet, thankfully I can do most of the service, but when I have too, I go to the dealer, bottom line is dont try to get by cheap on some things, tires first, best regards, rotgut

I agee on the rotating and balancing... its really a simple and very affordable way to extend the life of your tyres. If I remember correctly there was a thread some time ago where everyone put their input on what tyres they had...
I guess do a search and see what you come up with..

nicolaselias, i too have the 17s and am checking on your suggested tires.

rotgut, i do the maintenance and the rotation....just think the originals weren't that good and these surely didn't live up to their reputation. BTW, what tires do you use on your vehicles????

I have been doing some more research for the said tyre size, and this definitely has to be considered as one of the best bang for your buck high performance tyres..
I'm not sure if you are on the market for, be it high performance tyres or long distance touring tyres... you claim you dont hit the interstate often so I guess road noise isnt that much of an issue to you..

anyway I was thinking you could consider these options as I consider them well within you pricerange

Same goes for the Yokohama Avid V 4 S which may be more useful to you than the S drive as it is an all season tyre ( I looked at your profile and your up in WV where snow has to be a factor)

Tires are always a moody thing though.. when I bought my s80 it had two yokohama as-430's and two nitto NT-450 "extreme performance" tyres.. within a month or two the nittos beltings were coming apart and were causeing the car to wobble at low speeds... I ended up replacing the two with 2 AS-430's so now I have 4 identical tyres... It goes to show that highly regarded tyres can be just as much hit and miss as anything else...

Maybe I am a bit biased toward Yoko in my search but the tyres have been good to me and I regard them highly.. All in all I say just look around, and buy a brand you are comfortable with...
When i'm not in the US I use Hankook on most of my cars and I rate them very very highly for the price, but I dont see the type of selection available here...

Goodluck with your search.. tirerack and discounttiredirect will be your best friends I think..

on my fleet I have as follows: volvo s80- yokahama avias, v.w.bus- michelin six plye reinforced sidewall, peugeot 505- continetal, mercedes e-320- michelin, if I misspelled some things please excuse me.

97 Accord - Hankook Optimo H415 (honestly the best bang for your buck tyre I have ever used)
98 Acura RL - Hankook Optimo Plus 2
00 Mitsubishi Montero (pajero) - Firestone Firehawk ATX
04 Nissan Maxima - Formerly Michelin Primacy OEM I think.. (super expensive) ... recently replaced with Nexen N3000 series
Lastly 07 Nissan Cefiro - Bridgestone Potenzas

quite a lot of rubbers worth in the garage I see... nice variety also

You definately don't want the michelin pilot all seasons then, those tires are awesome. But they wear kind of fast, have 19kon them. They are rated a "7" on the edges, and a "6" in the middle with that mileage on them.

I tried the Fuzion HRi and so far I have been happy with them. Wear is even and not quickly either.
