Transmission Service?

Hi..I have a 99 S80 2.9L Non-Turbo with 256,000 Kms on it.
I had to change my ABS Module last week...Every warning you could think of kept lighting up ..
Brake Failure-Stop ASAP,STC Failure,ABS Failure,Power Steering Service Required and Automatic Transmission Service Required.
After I installed a rebuilt ABS module all the warnings went away except the Transmission Service Required warning.I went to a Transmission shop and had them scan the codes. All that came up was a speed sensor warning.I was told this would trigger the transmission light and power steeering warning since the steering is speed sensitive.
The transmission shop cleared the code and took it for a 20 minute test drive, the tech shifted and accelerated through all gears and said it ran great. I decided to have the transmission oil and filter changed while i was there. When they dropped the pan they found pieces of automatic clutch material in the pan.Suddenly i need a rebuild at a cost of $1000-$2000.
Its been almost a week,no codes or warning lights, car shifts perfect.
Talked to a second shop, they suggested driving it as long as theres no noticable slippage or problems and having the oil changed again in the fall to see if theres more clutch material in the pan.
Any ideas on who i should listen to?

Drive it. You will always find Black looking stuff in the Pans on these cars.

I too have an S80 1999 with 128, 000 miles on it and the exact same thing is happening to my car that occurred with yours. Every conceivable system is lighting up on the message center telling me that it needs servicing. You're the first one that I've seen on any of these forums that also had the transmission service flashing as well. My fiance and I have pretty much concluded that we think it's probably the ABS module that's causing the problem because he was coming home today with it (I made him drive it today after it stalled on me yesterday morning) and while he was rolling to a stop at a light the car suddenly broke hard and almost put him into the windshield and completely lost power. We have the car at an independent Volvo repair shop and the guy is going to look at it tomorrow and run the codes but I don't know if he'll be able to diagnose the problem or not. Anyway, in your situation did you get the ABS module replaced at a dealer or did you send it away to be repaired/rebuilt? Thanks.

The ABS module will not cause any sort of tranny codes. The 99-01 s80's had GM tranny's (cadillac design specifically) that were VERY prone to failure. I would advise calling your local volvo dealer and giving them your VIN number to see if you have any recalls that need to be addresed.

Transmission was replaced at 20,000 miles and there are 110,000 miles on that transmission. There are no signs/symptoms of any problems with transmission other than the code that is coming up on the message center, but then again, according to the message center I might as well drive my car to the junk yard and leave it there because every system needs servicing if it's accurate!

RE: Transmission Service?

There could be a communication problem with one module (ABS) and it could throw every light in the car on.

The car works on a Network. If one module has a problem it will prevent the others from working properly.

Hi Tech, I noticed in this thread you mention that 99 to 01 S80s had a GM Cadillac transmission (which was prone to have issues)...I thought all S80s trannys were GM? What's changed with 02s and newer, are they any better? Thanks.

RE: Transmission Service?

The ABS module can trigger a Transmission fault code.
I have Stability Traction Control on my S80 which is also monitored by the ABS module. The ABS module monitors wheel speed and can apply braking to individual wheels to keep the vehicle travelling straight.
If the module is defective it can be sending faulty information to the main computer regarding wheel speed, tricking it into thinking the tranny's going.
After replacing my ABS module with a rebuilt one from CrossCountry Automotive in Mississauga,ON all codes except the service one cleared. The code that triggered the transmission service light indicated a speed sensor fault.
Its been 14,000 Km (almost 10,000 Miles) with no fault codes or transmission problems:D since changing the module.
I paid $378 CDN delivered to my door and installed it in about 20 minutes.I was at a Dealer and saw someone pay $908.05 plus taxes(= $ 1044.25) for the same part with a 1 year warranty if installed by the dealer.

RE: Transmission Service?

I ordered the part .The company sent it to me with the 5mm Torx socket thats required to remove the 4 bolts holding the module in place.
I had to remove the airbreather assembly to get at the module. You also have to be careful when unplugging the wiring harness from the module. I changed the module in about 20 minutes working outside in my driveway.
If you are losing power it could be your ETM which is covered under a special Recall/warranty in Canada and the USA for 10 years rgardless if you bought the car used or new.If you already had your ETM serviced or Replaced Volvo will refund your money if you have the receipts for the work.

Yeah, by switching transmission suppliers. Trans after 01 are Aisin Warner transmissions.
Same company that supplies Toyota amongst others.

I have been having alot of problems out of my 99 volvo s80 and i need so help. A volvo specialist told me the hydraulics was gone in the transmission and i needed a new transmission. I have been reading other post and they say the abs module controls effects other things in the car. do you think i really need a transmission or are they pulling my leg.
