Turning Noise

Hi everyone. I've just got myself an X reg Volvo S80 2.4 petrol manual. It's a very nice car. However there is a small problem with it which I need some help with. I'm going to explain as simple as possible so to make the diagnosis easier. here goes.

Driving the car in a straight line is like driving my 1996 5 Series BMW, it's smooth a silk. When I turn left at any speed there are no problems, but when I turn right at roundabouts, give way's etc there seems to be a kind of grinding kind of noise coming from under the front of the car, possibly nearer the passenger front wheel if I'm honest. The thing is the previous owner told me it needed a new CV joint at that side, but I can also feel a vibration through the brake pedal when it happens. The sound you hear is kind of like RRRR....RRRR....RRRR....RRRR..., a bit like small metal teeth catching then slipping then catching then slipping again. The car passed it's MOT but there were advisories on it.

Offside and Nearside anti roll bar linkage has slight play in a ball joint
Offside front (rear bush split) suspension arm has slight play in a pin/bush
Steering column top bearing slightly worn
Offside front CV joint gaiter deteriarated, but preventing the ingress of dirt

Can anyone please give me some idea as to what could be causing this problem as it's spoiling the driving pleasure of the car.

Many thanks.

If its front wheel drive most likely ball joints.

Thanks for your reply. Not sure how that would sound like something grinding like metal teeth though, is this possible?

Hmm, very strange, every time the RRRR RRRR RRRR happens the traction control light flashes. The noise stops when I turn off the traction control.

Turned out to be the ABS sensor on that wheel. It was picking up false signals and triggering the ABS. :-)

Hi, just read your post about the noise on your s80.
Your last post said it turned out to be a faulty abs sensor.
Could I ask if this was easy to fix or did you take it to a garage if so was it expensive?
I think I have the same problem on my s60 2001 auto, with 85k on the clock.
Thanks

Hi toakenspy,

I suggest do not waste time on diagnosing yourself or through this forum, since there might be lot thing which need to be checked and your case it not electronic as well, so it is good if you get it to the specialist and let him check.......off course he won't charge you for checkup. Once done with diagnoses ....this forum is excellent place to solve the problems :)

Last owner seems gentle person as he told you to change the CV Boot....I am 70% sure there might be the problem of CV Boot...get it change with new grease. Hope it solves.

cheers

To be honest I swapped the car before I could sort it. The new owner did tell me the ABS ring needed replaced which cost around £200 to get done.
