Vent Box

Hey Tech, I finally replaced the Vent Box, it took about 8 hours since I've never done anything like this before. Taking the intake, intake manifold upper and lower wasnt' a problem. The pain in the butt was the original clamps it came with, I don't know how the hell volvo put them on but i replaced them with the ones you can tighten w/a screw driver. Now the hose at the bottom of the vent box seemed to be just a piece of rubber hose w/some cheap clamps you can tell because the rubber wasn't even cut evenly. (Talk about awesome Volvo dealership crafstmanship) i bought the one that was supposed to be put on there, it's a hose covered w/a metal sleeve. I broke the old Vent box w/ a breaker bar like you said and brought a dremel to cut away enough of the accessory bracket to take our the lower bolt. I cut the box open and it didn't look too bad, but the hoses were clogged and the dipstick seal and filler cap sealweren't in good condition. I didn't know how to take the fuel rail completely off so i had to work around it when I was tightening the intake manifold bolts. I actually had to take it all apart at the end because i dropped one bolt and it went right behind the box, it added about an hour. By then i knew my way around. I did put in new gaskets for the upper and lower manifolds and dropped in a K&N air filter.
Next I need to fix a spring mount for the right side of the car, I can hear every bump I go over, it's quite annoying. I drove it about 1200 miles this weekend and the transmission service light came on, kinda worried me but it went away today, I had the transmission serviced last year (got it flushed, new filter and gasket) should I be worried??? I got about 99K now

RE: Vent Box

Is your ABS light on?

JPizano23 12-28-2006 12:11 PM

RE: Vent Box

The ABS light isn't on, I had the ABS module rebuilt by Victor last year (It's worked great since then) The transmission light hasn't come on again, just makes me think if I should have it serviced again. It was kind of expensive though, about 275 for a complete flush, filter, and gasket.
** just a note, i thought being from Sweden these cars would do great in the snow and ice, mine is definitely not the vehicle you can rely on for the winter. Even with winter tires all around there's slip and sliding everywhere.

RE: Vent Box

Maybe try to have the codes pulled and see where they lead.
I know about the Snow issue. They do know how to make good heat though!!!

BTW congrats on doing the JOB!!!

RE: Vent Box

Tech I looked under my car today and I'm still seeing a small oil leak. I changed the vent box, dip stick seal, fill cap seal, and tightened the power steering hoses (they were leaking) what else could I check??? I'm replacing the oil filter housing this weekend as well as the oil drain plug w/ new seal. Any suggestions???

RE: Vent Box

Check the oil pressure switch.
Is it coming from the front or back?

JPizano23 01-05-2007 01:14 PM

RE: Vent Box

looks like it's comming from the back. Oil keeps accumulating under the black cover where the spark plugs are.

Oil cap seal?

JPizano23 01-08-2007 12:36 PM

RE: Vent Box

I replaced that too during the Vent Box replacement along w/ the dip stick seal. It looks like it's leaking in the back because the front has no oil leaks at all. But there is still oil accumulating under the spark plug cover.

RE: Vent Box

HMMM did it have the one hose that attaches to the Cam cover?

JPizano23 01-09-2007 02:28 PM

RE: Vent Box

cam cover, please elaborate, I can't tell what some of the parts are on the volvo. Where is it exactly on my engine?

tech 01-09-2007 09:10 PM

RE: Vent Box

Was there one hose that went to the top of the enigne?
It would have gone under the top cover that says Volvo.

RE: Vent Box

Sorry it took me so long to respond tech, it's been below freezing most of the week here. I checked and there's no hose attached to the cam cover. Like I said, it's funny right before I left Texas I took it for an oil change and it started leaking on me. Seems to be comming from the top driver's side of the engine.

RE: Vent Box

The only thing to do now is clean it up again and let it run and watch where it is leaking from.
Maybe some help from another BODY hitting the gas for you.

JPizano23 01-21-2007 01:17 PM

RE: Vent Box

Well tech, I took it to the car wash and cleaned up as much as I could before I did an oil change. There's still some oil on top of the engine, underneath the black cam cover. There seemed to be more oil leaking this time time from thedriver's side. Almost like it's comming from the top of the engine and running off the side. More the passenger than the driver, from there it accumulates around the transmission and drips.

RE: Vent Box

It would be hard to tell you now with out looking at it myself.
Did you watch for leaks and let it run?

JPizano23 02-05-2007 08:28 PM

RE: Vent Box

It doesn't leak when it runs, seems like it does it when it sits. DO you think my oil cap could be bad? I replaced the seal but maybe the cap doesn't close right.

tech 02-05-2007 08:54 PM

RE: Vent Box

Possible.
Maybe try a new cap.
That is cheaper than most other shots.

If you have a slavage yard near you try to get one off of a 850 or 960 and try.
