VISCO clutch
2000 S80 T6. I need to replace parts of the front axle assembly...but the dealer needs to know if the car has the VISCO clutch or not before they order me the parts. Apparently an S80 from 1999-2000 could be equipped with one or not. Is there a way to find out if it has the VISCO clutch? besides putting it up on the racks and inspecting the tranny...? Appreciate the help!

RE: VISCO clutch
Never heard of that.
The Clutch is for what? Is your car a Manual trans.? |
RE: VISCO clutch
I have attached a schematic of the front axle assembly with the VISCO clutch labelled...no it is not a manual. If i'm not mistaken, a VISCO clutch might have something to do with AWD capabilities.

RE: VISCO clutch
Never seen one before. You would have to look where the Axle goes into the transmission and see if there is something between the Axle and the transmission.

RE: VISCO clutch
Yea, i put it up on the rack and mine definitely is equipped with a VISCO clutch. Whatever that means. i spoke to the local mechanic who also works at the Volvo dealership and he couldn't even tell me...apparently it's just "another one of those parts that cost you money when they break, but dont actually provide any specific function to the car." haha.
Thanks anyway, tech. |
RE: VISCO clutch
Glad you figured it out.

RE: VISCO clutch
Visco clutch? If you are referring to a viscous clutch then that is not just another part that does nothing. A viscouus clutch is what stops one wheel from spinning in a turn for example. Basically it is a housing that has to plates inside, each connected to an input shaft. There is a fluid in there that has a thick weight like gear oil and as one wheel starts to spin it will make that shaft start to turn and thus turning the plate inside. Since there is thick fluid in there acting like a wall, the fluid will catch that other plate and effectively slow everything down to the same speed. This is basically a differential for an all wheel drive system to eliminate wheel spin and as the subaru commericals always said "from the wheels that slip, to the wheels that grip."
