Whistling sound from brake booster?
 

Hello everyone! I'm new here and this is my first post.

I have a 2000 S80 2.9 which the usual problems. One of which is an intermittent whistling sound coming from the driver side of the dash while the car is running at any speed. It stops for a while when you tap on the brake pedal slightly or when you hit the brakes then comes on again. This would go on for about ten minutes then it would suddenlly stop permanently.

Would anyone have an idea of where this whistling sound is coming from? What could it be? I hope someone out there can help me.

I edited this post (changed subject) after observing the problem again.

The break booster is bad. There is a hole in the diaphram.

I am having the same problem...annoying as hell. Usually happens on longer trips, especially when going downhill and having to brake frequently. Embarrasing too...have to use left foot to hold down pedal about a half inch or so to keep it from whistling dixie. Kinda feel like a nascar or formula 1 driver using both feet. Anyways...

How much are brake boosters going for?
Easy install?
Will I have to bleed brakes?
Where is this puppy located EXACTLY?
Amount of time it takes to replace?
How much would dealer charge for this job?

I believe the Booster is like $360.00 or $380.00 for the part.
It will take atleast 1 to 2 hours to replace.
I don't open the brake system to remove the booster. I just move the master out of the way.
If you open the hood and look at the back of the engine at about where the steering wheel comes through to outside you will see a Big black round thing. That is the booster.

The dealer will charge like 2 hours labor to do it.

If you decide to try ti let me know then I will give more details for getting it out.

Thanks tech for the quick and useful response. Gonna take the brake booster off my neigbors car and give him mine...no just kidding. Anyways, I'm on it like blue bonnit!
