Help: P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
Hey guys - first post here. Helping a buddy diagnose his 97 S90. Hes away at school with no tools and limited ability to work on the car.
Hes thrown a CEL P0340 - Cam Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction. Anyone have any ideas here? Hes cleared the code and it reappears almost instantly, and acts like the motor has a rev limiter about 3k rpms. Besides replacing the CPS, any ideas? Anyone know where the CPS is located on these motors? Thanks |

Welcome aboard.
There is very little he can do without tools but attachment #1 shows how to fix it and attachment #2 shows where it is. We seem to be having a problem with attachments so I shall try another way. |

RE: Help: P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
Thanks very much. So this is more than likely a wiring issue, and not a faulty CPS? Id be heading up there with tools to fix it if we could somewhat target the cause - the local Volvo shop is 2 weeks out to even take a look at it!
From that diagram it looks as if the CPS is accessible on the outside of the engine without removal of much? I read in another thread it was a pain to get to, under spark plug covers etc, but that was a different engine model. Thanks |

The plugs for the Cam sensor fall apart all the time. That might be the issue at hand.

Yessir it was! I had him go out to the vehicle and check the location of the CPS and trace the wiring - one of the plugs was completely apart! Plugged it back in and all seems well!
Thanks very much! |
Hey guys...I know this is an old thread, but I just bought a Volvo S90 and its running beautifully except for the CPS throwing codes and making it stumble and miss occasionally as well as hitting a 4200 RPM rev limiter almost all the time. So last night I pulled the connectors off of the sensor and both looked pretty good. I sprayed the male connector with contact cleaner and fit them both in good and tight after verifying 11.72 volts on Pin 2 as per the service manual's instructions. Are there other connections along that chain that are prone to failure? The car ran so beautifully last night with no stumbles, no CELs, and no false rev limiters. This morning I fired it up and it took a little longer to start then threw a code and got the false rev limiter. Any ideas? Thanks!
