I'm special-ordering a V90 from Sweden, since I want nothing to do with the phony-crossover V90 Cross Country sold domestically, and I'm wondering: is the 350-hp four-cylinder turbo/supercharged engine an entirely new design? Are there concerns about its durability yet?

 

The Drive-E engine is newer. Haven't seen major problems yet, but I also haven't seen any with a lot of mileage either.

 

The T-6 Engine in my S90 has been completely reliable and hasn't used any oil in 7K miles. No complaints here. There is a new hybrid T8 coming... I guess the T6 with turbo and supercharger wasn't complicated enough??? It will have a combined 400 or so HP. I think the battery will add a lot of weight though.

Volvo uses the same 2 liter block in just about all their cars. They have T4 2 liter naturally aspirated, T5 with turbo only and T6 with turbo and blower. This is a brilliant strategy as it lets them build a very solid engine and enjoy the benefits of scale and volume in spite of being a lower volume car company.

My T6 has very good isolation from vibration. Feels very smooth with plenty of torque.

I'm not a paid shill. Just like my S90.

 

My T6 engine has 315HP, not 350HP.

 

Thanks, Wallinger. My "350 hp" was a mistake. 315 is correct. (Actually, the latest material says 316 hp, but who's counting?) I have ordered a 2018 V90 from the factory, since they only sell the silly faux-crossover V90CC in the U. S., and I want a wagon, not a Tonka toy. It arrives in mid-July. Looking forward to it, especially with your engine reassurances.

 

Stephan, ALL of the ..90 models (XC, V, S) use the same two engines (T5 or T6). So, if you have not yet poured over the XC90 forums looking for engine issues, I would suggest you do. I think Volvo began using them in the XC90 2016 model year (which began in 2015).

 

Ok, I think we get it that you think the V90CC is silly, but there are those of us who need extra ground clearance and don't want the compromises of a high center of gravity SUV body. I love wagons, but I also have to navigate a rutted dirt road every weekend to get to a cabin, and the V90 would be scraping bottom every time. I also need to be able to drive in deep snow quite a bit, and there's no way a regular V90 would make it. My allroad with adjustable height air suspension was an awesome solution, but alas, that's no more. The V90CC is as close to that as anything available.

Sure, the black moldings are a bit silly, so I'm glad they offer the CC without them now, but if anything, the CC is an honest and practical compromise between the un-needed bulk of an SUV, and the handling of a wagon. To me, most SUV's make no sense when something like the V90CC would fit most people's needs much better, accusations of faux whatever notwithstanding.

 

I would guess that maybe five percent of V90CC buyers have to negotiate rutted dirt roads or deep, unplowed snow. The rest just love the pretense.

 

Well maybe true, but more than a few have to deal with deep snow. Suppose the same can be said of most SUV's.

 

Recently bought 2018 V90CC to pack lots of cargo going to mountain camp (cabin) in Adirondacks of upstate NY. Will drive it on rough logging roads, regular roads with lots of snow, etc. Bought in Bethlehem, PA, the tested coolant level is -24. Annual lows where I go in the 'dacks reach -30 annually - lowest low was -40. Two weeks ago, the low was -17, and further north in the same county (Hamilton) was -28! My dealer says bringing coolant to 50-50 mix might cause damage to some components. It also might void the warranty. I called three dealers in upstate NY; two said coolant can be added even to more coolant than 50 - 50 mix. One hasn't returned my call. Dealer in Montreal said they set coolant at 50-50 mix which takes temp down to -34. They don't think there are any other related differences in the cars delivered for sale in Canada or U.S. Well, washer fluid has more alcohol to avoid freezing. Can anyone give me more information about this, and provide advice? Thanks! Ralph
