2001 Volvo V40 - electronic reset for airbag control module
Hi Volvo enthusiasts!
I'm trying to have the airbags and seat belt pre-tensioners replaced in a 2001 V40. Here's the problem: the dealer can't get OEM parts to replace the airbags or pre-tensioners, so I would need buy these parts used and have another repair shop install them (dealer won't install used parts b/c of liability issues). The dealer said that they could then perform an electronic reset on the airbag control module.
However, the dealer said that sometimes replacement modules don't work even after an electronic reset. I'm not sure why this is. Is it because sometimes the used control modules have also been in a wreck and therefore need to be replaced, or are there other reasons why this could occur? If I were to buy a new OEM control module (like this one: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/vol...r-s40-30613049), would it be certain to work after an electronic reset?
Also, I've seen sites (like this one: SRS Airbag Module Reset Service | SRSModule) that offer a reset service where you can send in your original control module after a wreck and they will erase the crash data, which supposedly lets you use the module again. Is this at all legit? It seems to contradict some other stuff I've read saying that the modules MUST be replaced after an accident.
Thanks for the help!
P.S. I know many of you might not think it's worth it to have the SRS replaced in an '01. Here are the reasons why I'd like to pursue this:
1. The car only has ~85k miles on it, so I think it will last a lot longer.
2. I've estimated the cost to be between 2-3 grand, and I don't think we could get another car of the same quality and utility with that money.
3. My girlfriend is in grad school, so we are poor/in debt.

my guess is the OEM airbags were manufactured by Takata, with their recall has created a shortage. VIDA DICE (dealer tool) or top shelf OBD2 readers should be able to read the chassis codes to determine which part and clear codes. You can try going the used route (car-parts.com is a good resource but not sure if yards will sell used airbags - you may need to go craigslist for a part out).

I am not sure about that generation but the 2004.5 -2012 had seat belts and airbags by
AUTOLIV and the controller by Continental. I am really glad Volvo didn't cheap out.
Edit: that generation also used AUTOLIV (http://www.ebay.com/itm/00-01-02-03-...torefresh=true)
