The washer motor/pump assembly are directly attached to the reservoir. You need to remove the front bumper cover to access it correctly.

Tony, can it be accessed by removing the lower valence (ie the plastic part that goes under the radiator/fender to fender)? I need to do the same job on my son's S40... I took a look around and was wondering about the bumper cover or the lower valence as a way in...

In my experience, by the time that you try and wrestle this thing out of the car without the bumper cover off, you'll spend more time than if you just removed the bumper cover. Removing the bumper cover takes about 20 minutes. From there, the washer pump job is a breeze.
