engine transplant immobiliser problems

hi all..

i've got a 1999 volvo v40 1.9 td, its been a bit of a pain, last year the gearbox went, this year the engine siezed, i've sourced a replacement engine and had it fitted, but when the key is turned, there appears to be power for lights etc, but other startup functions dont work, there doesnt appear to be any of the ususal indicators, glow plugs etc lighting up, and i was wondering if this might be down to the immobiliser?

is there anything simple i might be missing? does the immobiliser need a new code for the new engine?

any help appreciated....

Rich

edit:

i've checked and the immobiliser light is still blinking on the dashboard, i've tried both keys but neither seems to work....

I think the pain is going to continue.

When you put in the new engine you would, presumably, have left the coded starter module that was attached to that engine in place. The immobilizer control module has not been programmed to read the code in that starter module.

You have two alternatives if that is the case:

1. Visit your friendly Volvo dealer and ask if it is possible to remove the code of the original starter module using the Volvo scan tool. I don't think it is becauseyou would need the immobilizer control module from the donor car.

2. Take the coded starter module off your old engine and put it on thereplacement. This is a major job asyou would need to remove the diesel pump first on both engines to get the modules out.

VADIS has the full story so it may pay to get one off eBay if you don't already have one.

hmmm...

I've had a look on the old lump, and cant see any module on it, where abouts would this be located, and what would it look like?

The mechanic seems to think that what you're saying will only apply to the newer engine type..? (this is a basic 1.9td not the d or tdi)

(the diesel pump is off th old lump as it was transplanted to the new one) the garage have got an immobiliser programming specialist dropping by later to have a look, and he seems to think it'll be straightforward to reprogram the immobiliser..

I honestly haven't got a clue about this, so any help gratefully received....

cheers

Rich

RE: engine transplant immobiliser problems

I have dug a little deeper and it looks as though it depends on the engine that was fitted. On the 1999 model there was a change over from the D4192Tto the D4192T2 engine. The instructions that I read were for the earlier version. If that was the engine fitted originally the coded starter module was as in the attachment. It would appear from the VADIS instructions to be attached to the diesel pump.

The later engine does not have these instructions so it is possible that a coded starter module was not fitted.

it would appear that there was no coded module, the fault was down to a wiring problem (or at least thats what the auto electrician said after £180 and 3 hours..)

although.....

i drove the car 5 miles and all was fine, went to drived the car back later and it wouldnt start, mechanic came and diagnosed a faulty diesel injector pump....

which has me thinking about your second post....
