Hi and seeking knowledge
Hi, I am a total newbie to Volvo's. And I am looking to purchase a 2001 v40 with 157000 miles. And any help would be greatly appreciated.
This is the add that was posted.
Decent shape. Brand new battery
Owned for 7 years and it's time to move on.
Been sitting in driveway, but runs just fine.
Headliner has fallen down and hood requires 2 people to open due to latch being broke.
Windshield wipers don't shoot straight.
Must use high beams when driving in dark. Can't figure out headlight wiring to fix it.
Small amounts of rust, otherwise decent body.
Leather is in good shape, just needs a good detailing.
Ac works.
Would make for a great 1st vehicle or anyone wanting to save money on gas. 4 cylinder but has turbo with a nice pickup. The car I'm looking to buy. He's asking $1500.

[QUOTE=tony1963;462597]In my opinion, its a piece of junk. Of course, I'm a dealer here in Alabama so my view of vehicles is different. I would pass.[/QUOTE
I don't want another car payment. Nor do I uave deep pockets. So it's cash and carry for me. Now if you have a vehicle with 157000 and selling for $1500 let me know

V40 with issues?
The headlight issue could be bulbs, the switch or multifunction stalk or CEM. Check the bulbs first then my bet is the CEM whick has the low beam relays. You can find a CEM used for 50-75 dlrs, no programming required for this model. Wipers that move but don't press down for the full swing need new arms. Easy to find via mail order. As to the price., 1500 is on the high side for a car in fair condition. Also I would make sure it already had at least one timing belt change and doesn't have an exhaust leak at the flex pipe, a common issue.

Never even thought about relays on the headlights. Fuses and bulbs and then check wiring was my go to plan. And already figured on asking about timing belt. I had a Nissan Xterra that I had to replace. Ty though for the heads up on the flex pipe.

I bought it
Well after looking it over and going for a test drive. I bought the v40 for $600.00. needs a fair amount of work. Has a major vacuum leak. Struts need replaced. Lot of small things that add up. The timing, water pump, and all the other crap was replaced at 124000 miles. And it's setting at 152000 niw

Update on my v40
This car had major problems. Knock sensor, mass airflow, low turbo pressure, map sensor, a bad ecm and burnt wires. And was told for the last 7 years just used regular unleaded.(87 octane rating)
replaced all the sensors but the knock. That code went away on its own. Had to replace the front struts.
The car runs and drives great. I have close to 800 invested in it. I think I did ok.. course my buddy bought a freaking nice s70 for 200 bucks. The people thought the turbo was out. The rust around the front grill. I'm looking for a new Silver hood
The interior as it was. I found a s40 had cup holders in the console. So swapped it out.
