Stiff Gears
 

Hello There!
I have a very anoying GEAR problem on my volvo v40 TDI (1998). It's difficult to select 1st and reverse and when you try to put it into reverse it may go into first instead.

I have figured out if I'm a little rough with it and use the clutch I can change the gears without problem. However as I'm trying to sell it, this problem is giving a very bad first impression and has cost me at least 2 potential buyers already.

The renault gearbox is also very loose and the gear stick is flapping around.

I've read that bushings will help this but the question is will they solve the main problem and how can I change the bushings in the gearbox side!

Im not sure if it is gear box bushings.It may just be the shifter cable bushings.That could cause the problem you have.
