Default ventilation system haywire

Hello,

this is my first post here, excuse my language. im dutch so this is not my native tongue.

ennyway my problem is this: ive bought a v40 without the climatecontrol and with the air-conditioning.

only there is something weird with the fan and the temp gauge, sometimes they dont respond, ive already removed the controll unit and put some contact spray on the connectors. but no luck, when the fan is in position 2 sometimes the fan will go full speed, or off or the speed of position two, so i think ive got some faulty wirering or something like that.

does this sounds foremilliar?

any help is much appreciated

best regards

rene

The system uses a power transistor that is located next to the fan behind the glove box. These transistors are known to go bad and the fan will run full speed no matter what position. I have not heard of them going intermittent though. I guess they could.

The part is about $60 for the dealer. Or if you are handy you can get the transistor from Radio Shack. I think there was a thread that I posted here a while back on how to do replace the thing.

Here you go.

I have had my 2003 V40 into both the dealer and a Volvo/Saab specialist shop at least five times for problems with the climate control system. They have calibrated the damper motors, cleaned contacts, replaced switches, and done a couple of other things I cannot recall. Each time it works fine for a few months, then starts acting erratically. The last time the dealer told me the next repair would be to replace the blower motor - at $500. Now it usually works perfectly, but sometimes the AC will only work with the fan in one of the manual speeds and sometimes the fan runs at whatever speed it wishes. It occasionally gets confused and blows hot air when it should be blowing cold. I plan to keep going like this as long as I can before shelling out the $500.
