Water accumulating in spare wheel well
 

I have just purchased a 2000 Volvo V40 wagon/hatchback with only 61,000 miles on it. Very good shape but I noticed some standing water in the spare tire wheel well. Surrounding carpeting is not wet and I can't surmise where the leak is coming in?? Is there supposed to be a drain there that might be clogged or is this some anomaly in the side windows that leak through the panels and go underneath?? There seems to be 2 flat black panels on either end of a curved piece of foam that is also a little wet on the bottom. Let me know.

when I had a similar problem on an old Audi (a sedan), it turned out to be a leaky seal around the tail light box... Check where the roof drain channels go (and any internal tubes ), hatch seal, tail lights etc. You may need to run the hose over the car to see if you can find something...

I have similar in a 2001 V40. Did you find your leak? I tore EVERYTHING behind the front seats out! A 3 hour job. Want to find leak before putting it all back in. Drove through car wash sitting in back but did not see anything.

This happened to me about three months ago. I had a flat, and when I got the compact spare out I noticed a pool of water in the compact spare well. I had had problems with water under the cabin floor last summer, which I found was caused by clogged rear sunroof drains. But this was not related to the drains as far as I could see. My conclusion was that it was caused by condensation -- warm air hitting the cold metal of the wheel well, causing condensation to form. This is one possibility, though there are others. I bought a silica gel car dehumidifier called Wisedry on Amazon and stuck both packets in the boot (trunk) of the car, in the area of the wheel well. It appears to have fixed the problem for me at least.
