2.0 L Diesel will not rev above 1100

2.0 L Diesel will not rev above 1100
My 05 Volvo V50 Diesel 2L starts but will not rev over about 1200.
The car has required an anti skid for the past month but I have not got around to it.
It has been surprisiingly cold here in Ireland - there was snow yesterday at it was -6 C this morning.
I thought that the problem might be connected with this but no change when the temperature warmed up.
It was quite alarmng today, because of the cold I drove out of the housing estate at low speed and only realised that the problem existed when I was on a main road.
The oil light is on on ignition and then goes away.
The oil is filthy.
There is no audible engine knock but the car shakes even in first gear and the engine is shaking like mad.
