I think mine are shot. The cold weather seems to be rendering them completely useless. They probably have one more year at best.

I can't figure out how they work though. All I see is the joint where it's attached. Does it even have the shocks on it or some other kind of mechanism that dampens the opening and closing?

A straightforward job. Go for the aftermarket struts which work as well as the original equipment for a lot less money.

This shows how to do it on an 850but the method is the same for the V70:
