Default '01 V70 T5 "misfire"?

I have an '01 V70 T5 with about 130K on it and as of late it has been acting strange under hard, foot to the floor acceleration. It is most noticeable when merging onto the highway or passing at higher speeds when in 3rd and 4th gear though it does do it in 1st and 2nd. I am guessing that's the case because it spends more time in the high RPM range. What it is doing feels a bit like a cough and the dealership diagnosed it as a bad cam cover seal with a $1300 price tag to fix due to all the mechanics that have to be dealt with to change them. The other option was $250 to only pull the plugs and clean out the oil. What they told me was that oil was leaking into the 5th plug well and causing it to misfire but I am not comfortable with that explanation. As I see it, once the oil is at such a level as to cause a misfire it should always do it, or at least do it a lot more often than just under max acceleration. Am I missing something here or does it sound reasonable?

On a side note, I am wanting to put a little more fire under the hood and am wondering about the up and down sides of messing with things like the exhaust, intake and chip. My mechanic doesn't like the idea of even changing the exhaust, but then he is a purist. On the expensive end, does anyone know if a T5-R engine would bolt up and any guesses as to what one would run me if it can?

Welcome to the forum.

My guess is the stutter happens under light excelleration too, but less noticable. With the increase RPM and putting out more power, a miss stands out. Short ofwicking the oil out everyday, I think you'll have to get the leak fixed.

Exhaust and intake change can help, but stay away from the chip, unless you want more repairs.

Last full tune up was around the 105K mark...full deal. There is no indication of any misfiring anywhere along the speed spectrum if the acceleration isn't hard. If you drove it like a conservative, safe driver you would never know anything was up. It's only when the foot is close to being to the floor and the RPMs (and boost) are way up.

It may be a bad coil pack. Sorry about the oops above. You have coil packs.
