I purchased the v70 that I have been looking at. When I took it on it's test drive I did not notice what I just noticed this evening. Tonight when I was driving around a parking lot and parking the car I noticed a shuttering. It happens when I'm pulling into a parking spot or making a sharp turn. I know what a bad CV sounds and feels like, but I don't think this is a CV. When I'm turning it feels like the whole driveline is shuttering. It's almost as if the car wants to stall, that's how bad it shutters. I have never owned an AWD and doubt the this is normal for one. The only thing I can think of is that the car doesn't like that the tires are traveling at different speeds considering it's an AWD, but that seems a bit far fetched to me. Please help if you can, thanks.

 

Is the fluid level full?

 

Willing to bet it is the driveshaft. Mine did the same thing, I did nto notice it when I test drove but soon later I did. It could be the tires fi they are way off in diameter but to get the level you are saying it is then I doubt it. The good news is it can be repaired with a rebuilt. There are two ways, one is do it yourself with a rebuild kit for $275 from FCP or the other is go to someone like colorado driveshafts and pay about $425 for one already rebuilt.

You can find out if it is it very quickly is take it in to a shop and have it checked or if you are handy then drop the drive shaft and see how it drives when it is off.

The car only shutters when I have the steering wheel turned at slow speeds like when I'm parking or when I driving around a parking lot taking left and right turns. I'm not hitting the steering stops either, it starts to shutter before I hit the stops. It is fine on the highway and driving straight at any speed. I would think that since it only happens while turning... that would rule out driveshaft.

The driveshaft is under more bind under those conditions that's why it only does it then.

 

don't these have the limited slip rear differential that needs the additive? could be just needs to change the oil with new additive.

 

Okay well the fulid level was pretty low, but even with the fluid fully topped off it still shutters.
I noticed that it doesn't do it when I'm making a turn when the car is cold(not cold outside, but engine/tranny cold). Once it warms up it starts doing it again. This is probably why I didn't notice the problem on my test drive. Does this still sound like it might be the driveshaft? I just got the car, and I don't want to put 500 dollars that is not necessary.

I would just remove it and see if the vibration goes away.
You found a driveshaft for $500.00?
Lat I knew they were more like $1200.00.

 

Last time I checked the dealer the driveshaft was about $900. I still say that it is driveshaft. In about 35 minutes you will know for sure, you use a 6MM allen to remove the bolts for the driveshaft. The car will drive just fine without the driveshaft, if it stops the shudder then you know what it is. As another note it is usually the front joint, the rear rarely goes out. If you were to disassemble the joint or see the new one then you will understand why it shudders the way it does when you turn.

I didn't find a shaft for 500, but maximuse34 said that they have rebuild kits, so I estimated.
I was thinking of removing the driveshaft and if it is the problem, leaving it out if possible. I live in New England and I only really need the AWD in the winter. Don't get me wrong, I will fix the driveshaft but is it going to create a problem if I have it out for a couple months?(money is a little tight right now)

On another note, I got a P0455 code this weekend. Said large evap leak. I checked the gas cap and cleared the code. If it comes back, is there something popular to these vehicles that triggers this code?

It will not hurt anything to run without the driveshaft.

If the code comes back check all the hoses from the motor to the tank.

 

Here is the link to his ebay stuff. There are 2 different sizes of flanges so make sure you get the right one. I have not ordered one from him since it was going to take too long for me to get it for the trip I was going on. I ordered the rebuild kit from the dealer and got it overnight. You can also order the rebuild kit from FCP. Just FYI, the rebuild kit from the dealer came to about $330 and I had to do the work.

what has to be done to the driveshaft to fix it? not a simple u-joint replacement like the old days, i gather?

Nope on the U-joint.
There is a different type of joint on the front side. It is close to a C/V style joint.

 

Maybe a point - had some cv joint work one on my 98 V70 and it developed shuddering at low speed etc but ok at speed - turned out to be the antilock braking sensor not fitted back correctly. Also effected speedo readout as sensor produces speed info.

I also have a 2000 v70 xc w/turbo I noticed a bad shutter while going straight or turning in steering wheel. dash, and shifter. what did you do to fix.

 

I realize that this is a 6-year old post, but as a new member- it was new to me.

This is exactly what I was experiencing in my "new" 1998 V70 and I lay awake at night fearing the dreaded bevel gear swap out.

I had a disturbing rumble from close to the bevel gear/transfer case whenever I turned either direction at more than a crawl. I couldn't imagine steering having anything to do with the prop shaft, but due to this thread, I decided to take the plunge and drop the shaft- bingo! Problem solved.

The front joint on the shaft was dried out and really rough to rotate around, the center bearing rubber was shot...it was definitely time.

Called our friends at Colorado Drive Shaft per recommendations on other threads here and I will have my AWD back this week. I live in MN...it is worth the $400!
