2001 V70 Fuel Pump Leaking

Just got word from the dealer service rep that I need a new fuel pump on my 2001 V70 T5 -- $890 + tax. Last couple of days I noticed strong gas smells in the garage. Drove the car a short distance and parked it back in the garage. Checked a couple minutes later and, sure enough, the garage reeked of gasoline. When I checked underneath I found gas staining the underside of the gas tank and drips on the floor.
This car has 87K miles on it. I can't imagine my fuel pump should be leaking like this. Huge safety risk. I did notice the Volvo Recall R176 on 2001-02 S60 models in "Arizona and Nevada." Seems they're having problems with the S60 fuel pumps from those years and are pinning the blame on "fuel quality and climate conditions." Turns out the 2001 S60 and V70 models have the same fuel pump.
I'm getting the old fuel pump from the service rep and filing complaints with Volvo and NHTSA to see if we can't get this recall extended to the rest of the faulty fuel pumps out there. Anyone else running into leaky, faulty fuel pumps on their 2001-02 V70?

I have the same problem right now. My shop just replaced one in a car as well last week.
I can tell you the problem and how to fix it by yourself in about two hrs.
Remove the black round cover 4 10mm bolts just under the back seat, passenger side. You can do this without removing the seat, Just the floor padding.
Once off...from the trunk section of the car you can clearly see the fuel pump by tilting the seat forward. OK heres the problem.
The clear opec plastic pump has a big detent on top. This is most likely where it's cracked and leaking and is a relitevely easy fix.
Clean the fuel out of the four cavaties on top of the pump well. scuff it up lightly and get some 2 part epoxy from home depot in the paint department, The saringe is the blue one. Mix it and fill the top of the cap. This seals it and only costs under three bucks.
I know epoxy sounds hoaky but It really works.
I hope this help you. It worked great for me and my V70

OK it's been a few weeks and still working good,No make that great. No more gas smell, No more leaking, No more problem.
For the skeptics my local shop had two fuel pumps out of cars with the same problem, All crackes in the same place. Looking at the part and making the simple repair there's no reason this fix shouldent last forever.
Good luck
John

(((Nice fix but I was wondering. What if you sell the car and later on the crack reopens and a fire starts. Are you liable)))
No, It's done in such a way as to explode and destroy all human remains leaving not a trace of the person or car. BTW i will make you a "Killer" deal on the car if you want it [sm=badbadbad.gif]

Hi. I am having the same problem with my wifes V70. I tried the epoxy fix and, even though I was metitulous about cleaning/degeasing and roughing up the surface, the smell has returned (though not as bad as before). So, at this point, I am planning to replace the leaking part. Two questions: How do I remove the big plastic ring that holds the whole assembly into the gas tank? What part actually needs to be replaced (the fuel pump itself is inside the leaky plastic housing). Anyone have a part number? Anyone know if Volvo issued a recall to cover the 2001 V70's??? OK, thats 4 questions...[sm=smiley25.gif]

Is the smell a dead giveaway you have a problem? I park my '01 in the same spot every day at work and always see this wet spot right under where my gas tank is, but I don't smell anything and I don't have any stains on my garage floor. I wasn't sure if it's my car or this pipe above the parking spot that may just be dripping condensation. It hasn't dripped anything on my roof though.
I'll have to check this out this weekend. I have no gas smell coming from anywhere on the car.
