ABS TRACS Module Removal V70 XC 1998

Hi. I am having my module rebuilt/repaired and wondered if anyone had a step by step of the removal process for this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

ABS MOdule removal

I did mine about 2 years ago and it was quite simple. You need a very small Torx driver (05). I remember getting pretty good instructions from Victor Rocha's web sight (who also sold me the torx driver and did my repair). Google Victor and ABS and I'm sure you'll find him. Let us know how it goes, and if you need more help.

Thanks! I will check out the info re: Victor. Can you tell me whether it's a torx socket or driver i need? They seem to be a little hard to come by in that size, E5, without buying the whole set. (And I already arranged to have it rebuilt through a rebuilder other than Victor, so i can't ask to use his tools, unfortunately.)

ABS Bolts

Does anyone know if the bolts holding the module are ALWAYS the E5 Torx variety? They sure don't look like it to me. They look like regular/hex head bolts... Might make things easier if i just need to get a 5/32 or 4 millimeter socket rather than continuing my quest for the ever elusive e5 socket.

Sometimes people replace them with normal screws.

thanks, tech. i am more concerned right now with getting the bolts OUT, and it's a real pain in the arse. that's why i was wondering if it was always a torx or there was a spec for some other bolt becaus emione dont look like torx.

tech 05-24-2009 06:57 AM

I think they are a 7 or 8MM head on the bolts.

You probably won't find the E5 socket in a store or part of a set. I ordered mine from Sears, about $10 shipped.

I bought a set from Discount Auto parts that had one in it.

well, i got two of the bolts attaching the module, but the two lower ones are stripped... Anyone have any tips for extracting these stupid torx bolts when they are stripped, or should i just take the whole abs regulator out and try to get them out on the bench? i am so frustrated right now i could give this friggin car away.

any tips would be great. thanks

tech 05-30-2009 01:24 PM

Sorry to say but right now that would be the best way.(Taking it out)
The socket must have been a cheaper one with space between the end of the socket and where the teeth start.

liamhenryf 05-30-2009 01:28 PM

that's what i figured. any tips or links for the removal process?

it seems someone tried their hand at this job before me (the levered cover for the plug was broken and most of the bolts were screwed up when i started.)

thanks,

liam

You will have to undo all the brake lines. Then there is 3 10mm screws holding the assembly bracket to the body of the car. Then you should be able to remove it.

another case of simple job turned nightmare

rallyracer 06-02-2009 02:59 PM

i would try to reach a Dremel in there and grind/cut of the heads, pull the unit, then the bolts will come out by hand.

liamhenryf 06-02-2009 04:36 PM

Well, I wound up taking the brake lines off and taking out the whole blasted unit (which aint no picnic with it all intact). Got it on the bench and ground the heads off the stupid torx bolts and sent the thing away to be rebuilt.

In the meantime, anyone have a resource for hex head bolts of the same size? (4mm) There's no way i am putting torx back in...

Also, is it completely necessary to do a "power" bleed of the system on re-assembly (since i have drained so much fluid during this procedure)? Or can i just do it the standard way?

Tranks for all your help, guys.

Liam

tech 06-02-2009 07:50 PM

You can do a standard bleed on it.

Check Lowes and Home depot. If you cannot find any let me know I think I have 4 I can send you.

liamhenryf 06-05-2009 03:59 PM

thanks, tech! i will take you up on that. can you let me know your email address/cost so i can paypal you for the bolts and the shipping?

my address is
