Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor P2131

Help pls: 2004 V70 2.5T, Auto, 112,000k
Last winter, CEL, code P2131 "Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch "F" Circuit Range Performance". Cleared code, no issues until this weekend. I note that sometimes the cruise will not engage, the "cruise" light illuminates but it will not "set". Solution is to shut off and restart, then the cruise will set. This weekend, the yellow triangle illuminated and "engine service required soon" text in text box. This light went out after several drive cycles over the weekend. I checked for codes and the P2131 is in the pending memory. Question, and please no guesses, I believe that my accel pedal is the problem, based on the code and the fact that it makes a odd plastic "click" sound when fully depressed. The pedal is $170.00 Cnd. I've read where in posts that the new pedal must be "activated" by dealer software so that it will function. The parts and service advisor don't "THINK" this is necessary, but of course they want me to "bring it it". I'm prepared to replace it myself and hope that this ends my issues. No other problems, cars starts and runs great, idles smooth etc. and all the dealer "programs/recalls are up to date. I'm hoping that there is no issue with my ETM. Anyone experience this issue? Is the pedal "plug and play".

Dave

What was your solution?

Hi Dave,

I am experiencing the exact same issues as you in my 03 xc70. Did the pedal assembly solve the problem, or did you have to replace the etm?

Thanks,

Rob

In all my years as a Volvo technician, I have never replaced a pedal. 99% of the time it is the ETM (throttle body) and only the dealer can perform a ETM test with VIDA. I highly suggest you dont replace the pedal until you have your throttle tested and/or cleaned.

EDIT: usually the click you feel when the pedal is fully depressed is the "kick down" button which tells the trans to downshift because you are putting the pedal to the metal.

Are the '03 and later Volvo's suceptible to the same ETM failures as the '01 and earlier cars? If so, should these also be covered under the prior recall, since '03's are just now getting to the mileage where questionably-designed ETM's would start to fail? I wonder if we'll see a spike in the number of Bosch failures vs. the prior Italian brand?

The computer hookup fee alone at my dealer is $130, and they said they will then likely charge me an additional 2-3 hours to determine if it is the ETM or something else failing. So, I'm looking at ~$500 dollars just for them to tell me what is wrong -- and the service tech made it a point that I don't have a choice since other independent shops don't have the same computer equipment/software to fully diagnose or reprogram the ETM if it does need to be replaced. I've heard ETM replacement costs ranging from $850 to $2000. Not good.

The pedal assembly is $130. So I was *hoping* that this may be the culprit...

Do I have any other options? Clean the ETM? Low-cost aftermarket?

HOLY CRAP MAN!! Where do you live?! $130 just to scan it and then another 2-3 hours to run an ETM test? My shop charges 85-89/hour and would charge no more than ONE hour to run a diagnostic test and test the ETM. There is an ETM software update your car may or may not need and you would have to pay for the software, but we would NEVER charge 2-3 hours to just run a test. That is ridiculous!! Unfortunately the tech is right and the ONLY way to run a test or update the ETM software is with the VIDA (dealer only) cart.

The only option you have is to clean it yourself. But unlikely it will work to clear that specific code. ETM's are expensive and no one else can reload the software once replace.
