Bevel Gear

Is this called the angle gear also? How can I determine for sure if that is going in my car. Slight metallic clanking from underneath once in a while. Someone mentioned bevel gear failure at about $2500 to fix. I'm sick. Is this a DIY job or really a giant PITA to do? I've got to be sure of this before I decide to dump the car and go Jap. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

RE: Bevel Gear

It is ok to replace.
It might be the Driveshaft making the noise as well.

RE: Bevel Gear

Oh boy :-(

Jacked up the car to have a look around. Seemed one of the front brake shields was slightly bent and just barely touching the rotor. Yippee !!!, um, not quite. Took off the rear wheel. I then grasped the rotor and rotated it back and forth a bit. There about an inch of play and a clacking noise coming from the what I would normally call the differential where the axles go in. My sinking feeling is that this is call an angle gear or bevel in this car. Anyway, there is a definite clack coming from it when I move the wheel. Is this my problem and is this the dreaded bevel gear symptom?

Thanks all.

No sure Hard to say for sure without looking at it.
You will have a little play in the differential.

RE: Bevel Gear

It is the driveshaft, 950 for parts, chicken-feed for labor. The car properly needs 2700.00 worth of work, the driveshaft, engine pad and sway bar links which I'm having done; it also need rear main seal, turbo tube seals, front rotors and pads. The RMS is VERY VERY expensive, 50 cents for the part, 12 hours labor. They said isn't not too bad yet and I can wait until next year. The brake work and oil tubes I can fix. I know there's other work, the alarm/remote key system, the P0410 emissions sytem thing, fog lights and a few other unserious problems. I think I will sell it when I get it back from the DS work. Yeah, 3500 would give me a nice and fixed car, but I paid too much, 6200, already put in 1200 for other work, + the 1280 that I'll be paying on Saturday, 8680 for a 98 w/135000. Time to admit I made a big and expensive mistake and try something else.
DAMN!
