Is it a big job to replace a cv joint gaiter,by that I mean is it a job for the garage or a keen diy owner.

Do you mean the entire axle?

It might be cheaper to just replace the entire axle. Also alot easier.

So you only want to replae the boot not the joint?
Sorry I didn't fully understand. The word gaiter threw me.
But on the other hand if you do it sometimes they can be a major pain to get the outer joint off to install the new boot.
If you pay someone then there is the labor to remove it then redo the boot which will be around 2.5 hours total.
and only like 1.0 labor for the replacement of the axle. That you can do yourself pretty easy.

When I used to replace the boots only sometimes the outer joints could take 40 to 60 minutes to get apart

You have to hold a clip open and hit it with a brass punch at the same time to get it apart.
