coolant warning

The coolant warning light in my '98 V70 keeps coming on intermittently. I checked the reservoir this afternoon, and it looks to be a little low . . . just under the "minimum" line. I know that the perferred mix is 50 percent water, 50 percent antifreeze, but before I top it off, is there something special about the Volvo antifreeze? The owner's manual specifies "Volvo coolant only." Is this just a marketing scheme, or is there really something different about the Volvo antifreeze? And, if so, is it safe to presume that it's only available at the dealership?

You can use any Green Antifreeze.

RE: coolant warning

I recently changed it on my '98 V70. Went to the dealer and he suggested me to use any ethylene-glycol antifreeze that is green in color. I looked at the volvo type c coolant: on the can it said ethylene-glycol phosphate-free antifreeze. After doing my own research I settled on buying Peak antifreeze which is ethylene-glycol based, phosphate-free, and green in color.
