Default Would you buy this?

I'm a euro enthusiast but would be my first volvo.

Found a 2001 V70 t5 with 3rd row for $3600.
I have wanted one forever but I am reading that the tranny is my concern and it seems it has NOT been done on this one.
Here is the carfax:

CARFAX Price Adjustment™
Accidents, service records, number of owners and many other history factors can affect a vehicle's value. The CARFAX Price Adjustment is a tool that analyzes millions of used car transactions to measure how the combination of all the information reported to CARFAX affects the value of a particular vehicle. The vehicle's retail book value plus the CARFAX Price Adjustment will give you a more accurate measure of the vehicle's value. Use this tool, along with a vehicle inspection and test drive, to make a better decision about your next used car.
First Owner
When the first owner(s) obtains a title from a Department of Motor Vehicles as proof of ownership.
New Owner Reported
When a vehicle is sold to a new owner, the Title must be transferred to the new owner(s) at a Department of Motor Vehicles.
Ownership History
CARFAX defines an owner as an individual or business that possesses and uses a vehicle. Not all title transactions represent changes in ownership. To provide estimated number of owners, CARFAX proprietary technology analyzes all the events in a vehicle history. Estimated ownership is available for vehicles manufactured after 1994 and titled solely in the US including Puerto Rico. Dealers sometimes opt to take ownership of a vehicle and are required to in the following states: Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and South Dakota. Please consider this as you review a vehicle's estimated ownership history.
Title Issued
A state issues a title to provide a vehicle owner with proof of ownership. Each title has a unique number. Each title or registration record on a CARFAX report does not necessarily indicate a change in ownership. In Canada, a registration and bill of sale are used as proof of ownership.

Huh? Forgot the question... Are you asking if the car fax is clean enough? If the car doesn't have a salvaged title and you like it, go for it. Actually you can get one with a salvages title as long as you get it at a low price and don't need to resell it and make money.

No.
My question is reliability and issues to look for.
I am a bimmer girl myself but due to life situations.. there isn't a bimmer to suit my needs.
I have bimmer friends, VW friends, saab friends, even Citroen friends.
No volvo knowledgeable friends.
Soooo..
I don't know really what to look for. It looks good to my uneducated eye with the exception of the question of the tranny.
My friends are actually trying to talk me out of this one.
I have always eyeballed them and wanted one.
It's a compromise of wants and needs. But is it PRACTICAL?
That I cannot say so I was looking for educated opinions from those that know and love the cars.

An easy check. Check if the engine is sludged by looking at the oil cap, pull the dipstick. If it smokes, walk away. Though it's an Auto Auction car. I would still walk away. Trust me.

If you don't know what to look for take it to a Volvo dealer and ask for a used car check out ($$). It will cost you a few bucks but it's likely the best way to have it checked. Next would be an independent shop that advertises it works on Volvo's.

It shouldn't be any different than what you did to buy a used BMW.
One very important thing to know and keep track of is your timing belt and the miles on it.

Buy it for a better price. Go in, make your offer and plan to walk out. If they counter offer, be polite and have reasons ready why you should pay what you're offering. Take someone with you who doesn't like Volvo's and will say so (poleitely) so if the sales person starts expounding on how great a Volvo is they will pipe up to counter with the better points of leaving and taking another look at a BMW somewhere else. Don't toss a list at the sales person but have a couple good reasons why the cars worth what you want to pay.

They want your money more than you need that one car. Having someone talk the car down a little (your friend) drives them nuts because they fear losing the sale.

If you can't come to a $$$ you're happy with there is always ebay, craigslist and this forum's classifieds section. Nice thing here is we will tell on each other or warn you if someone is selling a lemon.

It already sounds like you want the car and you're looking for someone to back you since your friends won't. The worst thing is if something happens you'll have a lot of I told you so. What ever you would do before buying a BMW you need to do for a Volvo. I'd warn you they are a little expensive on maintenance but if you've been a BMW owner you already know about high maintenance

The smoking dipstick is a symptom of a plugged up PCV system. It's a pretty common thing on a Volvo and NO, NO reason to run from one. If it's really bad there is a passage in the oil pan that gets plugged and you either pull the oil pan off and clear it or add an external "catch can" to cure it. If you don't know what that is you can google it.
Sludge is bad but there are ways to clean sludge out of an engine without taking it apart.

Good luck

Never assume low mileage is good. I used to work in fleet maintenance and had company drivers who were given a brand new car and never changed the oil until 30 or 40K. They only did it then because something else needed work or tires.
