Default ETM Troubles?

Soooo, I have already experienced stalling while stopping in my 2000 V70. Today I was going to be near a dealer, and was going to check some pricing and inquire about my stalling issue. While driving around it nearly stalled on me, and after that when coming to a stop the idle went so low the car shook several times I told the girl the trouble and her only comment was to ask if the check engine light was on. It is not. I was trying to get my ETM replaced before it completely failed. Does the Check Engine light have to be on before the dealer will replace it? And should I expect to be charged if they find nothing wrong. I am new to taking my vehicles to the dealer, I always fix em myself. I set up an appointment for this coming Monday. Should I cancel?
Thanks, jmc

Sometimes they will tell you they might have to charge a check out fee.
I haven't heard of anyone having to pay it yet. But they might.

I would make sure you tell them it stalls and the Idle surges up and down.
There might be a code stored in the computer but not turning the light on.

The last couple of people I talked to that complained about stalling/surging/Lack of power the Dealer did the software upgrade under warranty.

You should see if your vehicle is available for "RECALL 155". It will be a software download only....unless there are hard internal faults in the ETM, then they should replace it under the warranty for ETM's....

Thanks fellers.
Can I check on that Recall 155 myself, or just ask the dealer?

You can stop by the Dealer and have them run your Vin# and they will tell you if there is any open recalls.

Alllllriiiight. I called the dealer to cancel my appointment because the choke on my RX-7 is acting up and I had nothing else to drive. I posed the question about recalls, dude ran the VIN and said the only thing he saw was a ETM upgrade. This will take about an hour. So, I will keep my appointment and get my ETM repaired. Woo Hoo!
Thanks for all the input guys

I received a letter from Volvo informing of the re-call (although they are quick to point out that it is not a re-call). In addition, they gave the info on the extended warranty and an address to mail a receipt if you had any prior ETM work done for a reimbursement. I had my ETM cleaned at the dealer because of erratic driveability............the check engine light was NOT on. I have sent for the reimbursement............we'll see if Volvo follows through.

Just got back from the dealer. They cleaned the ETM and upgraded the software, no charge. I asked if I started having further troubles it would still be under the extended warranty; since the ETM was not actually replaced. He simply said that the warranty was for 10 years or 200,000 miles. I am currently at 6 years and 91,000 miles, I suppose I can deal with that.
Thanks for the input,
jmc

Did they clean it as well as doing the computer upgrade? I have read that an unclean ETM will cause erratic idle and such. Like overoiling a K&N filter can cause erratic idle if the oil sticks to the ETM. I guess it is a fine wire or something in there..? I have never looked. That is all I can think of. I am new to vehicles with such testy electronics. Prior to the 2000 V70 my newest vehicle was a 1995 Pathfinder, which was very home mechanic friendly.

The warranty on the ETM is 10 years or 200,000 miles, have you gone back to a dealer? Is the check engine light on?

They actually did it twice, the dealership I purchased it from had it sent to have it cleaned and upgraded and when it continued I had them re check it. And the check engine light never comes on. the two lights that do are the transmission arrow and battery arrow. ANd there is no code thats come up.

Yikes, that's no good. Maybe the ETM will have to be replaced...? What does the dealer say each time you come in about this?

Hmmmm....... not good at all. They have no suggestions or anything? Did they say drive it until you stall on the interstate? I am at a loss. Maybe you could demand, politely, that they replace the ETM...? That is potentially an extremely dangerous condition.
