Geartronic option 2006 V70 2.5T

My question is this, if the gear selector is in drive, and slips into the manual position while driving, is this supposed to happen or should it always show"D" on the dash until I move it over?
My gear shifter is shifting over into the 3,4,5 option of the manual position. And when I slow down to a stop, it shifts down into the 1,2 position. Does this mean a possible transmission problem to look forward to, or is this something this year model does?
I just bought it this week and hoping that it is not a future issue with this great car. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

The AW Geartronic system is designed to both shift up (to avoid redlining the engine )and to also shift down to lower gears when you slow down when you are in the manual mode. It's a nifty little feature so you don't have to shift down when coming to a stop.

Just remember to get the fluids changed regularly though! There is a ton of data available about what to fluids to use and what methods to use on these forums. As long as you keep everything maintained fluid-wise these transmissions will last a long time!

On our '06, it remains in "D" unless and until you pull it towards your (left) and then the indicator shows the gear you are currently in. Given that its electronic control, my guess (and its a guess) is that something is going awry in the shifter housing or possibly in the electrogizmos inside the transmission. For once, I'm suggesting that a dealer trip for diagnosis is in order. And, in ours (66K miles), the pull to the left takes some effort, not just a nudge.

there is a yellow plastic clip that has broken and needs replacing. That yellow clips keeps the handle in auto mode, until you force it sideways into manual mode.
