Help- 2000 XC70 - Will NOT Start - No Codes
Symptoms: Car turns over slowly, lights are all on on dash- no start.
Possible causes: starter, ECM, key transponder, park/neutral switch... This is my first post and first Volvo, so I should say that a fairly capable mechanic that is looking for insight into the car model and engine. For example, known issues for a classic "no start" condition for Volvos When I got the car, it was not starting and showed a P0335 code for "crankshaft position sensor" So far, (1) I have replace the battery, (2) cleaned the battery terminals (3) replaced the crankshaft position sensor. I plan on checking the compression on each cylinder this week and checking the fuel pressure. Right now the OBDII scanner is showing no codes at all. Still no start... 1) Where is the best place to start next? 2) How do you know if the immbolizer system has been tripped? 3) Does anyone know a simple way to bypass the park/neutral switch? BTW- I am very open-minded and open to input. PLEASE correct me if I am wrong about anything. Thx. |
Update- So all the fuses and relays checked out good.
Checked the old Crankshaft Position Sensor that threw the P0335 code with the multimeter and it checked out well within range. Not sure what this means, but it might be one indication that the ECM is throwing false code and may need to be replaced. Will still check fuel pressure and compression before replacing ECM. Also have ruled out Neutral/Safety switch since car turns over. 1) Is it normal for almost all the lights to be on in the dash cluster while starting? |
I found a replacement ECM for $50 shipped so I opted to order it just so that I would have 1 less factor to consider.
The ECM should arrive tomorrow and I will let you know if it solves the "no start" I still dont have any answers on the basic of questions I asked. I know someone has to know these answers: 1) Is it normal for all the lights on the dash to light up when starting? 2) Engine turns over very slowly- like lack of compression. Is this normal for this car engine (B5244T)? 3) Is the tachometer supposed to jump while you are starting the car? Mine is not. 4) How do you know if the immbolizer is the reason that the car is not starting? |
The ECU will not work in your car. You have a networked car and the ECU'S are programmed to the car. Also you cannot get a used one to program to a car.
Do you have spark, fuel, injector pulse? Yes the tach should jump. Do you have a scanner to pull codes? |

Not sure how to replace engine computer then if it goes bad.

I will check for fuel pressure tomorrow. BTW- Not sure how to check injector pulse? Suggestions? 1) Can the fact that the tach is not moving on crank be as simple as a bad starter? Not sure to rule this out yet.. |
