Low Airflow

I have an '04 V70 with ECC unit. I noticed that when I turn it on everything works fine but after about 15 minutes the airflow will diminish tremedously throught the vents. I can hear the blower blowing like a hurricane but hardly any air coming out. This happens with the auto button on or off. It will be fine once I turned off the car and turn in back on. Could this be a bad blower resistor?

Non Volvo-specific answer. But, if the fan is running, the resistor is probably o.k. Especially if you can manually vary the speed of the fan. More likely, its
the gizmo (vacuum) that adjusts the "doors" that direct the airflow. Loose/cracked hose is suspect number one. Airflow on most cars is mechanically directed via vacuum control.

Caveat: I've never been under the dash of our Volvo to look or seen the elusive shop manual for our '06 to learn how these work.

Chrysler Sebrings have an endemic resistor problem which let us run the fan on high or none at all. Replaced it, and now its variable speed again. That's what leads me to conclude its not your resistor.

I've forgot about this problem until yesterday when I drove for more than 30 min. in the heat. So how do I check the vacuum for the damper? It does sounds like the hose is blocked off after 30 min. because I can still hear airflow but very little coming out of the vents and dash. But like I said it would be fine after I shut it off for 10 min. and then airflow will diminish after 30 min. of driving. Tech, have you got any thoughts on this?

How is the cabin filter?

volvo962 05-19-2009 06:50 AM

I checked the cabin filter and it's not full of trash just normal dust. I will replace it since it's been over 1 yr. I don't see how a dirty cabin filter could effect the airflow like that. Is there a thermostat that control the temperarture that could've gone bad? Anybody got a clue?

volvo962 05-19-2009 02:12 PM

I did a search and found this: http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=60662
It sounds very familiar to my problem and culprit was a bad evap temp sensor. Where is this sensor located?

tech 05-19-2009 07:58 PM

If you drop the lower dash panel on the drivers side in the side of the climate box you should see a white sensor. That is it.

Also open the glovebox and check the inside air vent that sucks air in if you use recirc.
I have seen napkins get sucked up in there and cause low air flow.

Can you tell me how to open that area where the sensor is, as i cant seem to find it.

BTW, i have a 2001 V70 T5, if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance

tech 05-31-2009 04:26 PM

It is in the same location as above.

sleech 06-01-2009 11:45 AM

Thanks tech.

I could nto beleive how much crap was in the cabin filter (Leaves, Hair etc) The filter was black, so i dont think it had ever been changed.

I purchased a new one and all seems ok so far!

Thanks

Cool glad it is better.

Where is V70 Cabin Filter Location??

Hello,

I thought I read somewhere online that the filter was located under the cover of the glove box. I took off the 2 torx screws, and removed the cover, but didn't see any area that would accomodate the filter (it is quite large!)

Any idea on where to look and how to install it?

Thanks!

If it is 2000 or older it is under the cowl cover on the passenger side,

volvo962 06-29-2009 01:06 PM

After replacing the evap. temp. sensor, I finally got a chance to go on some 30 min. or longer trips in mid 90's temp. The air works great, too good in fact I had to turn up the temp. setting.

tech 06-30-2009 08:21 PM

Glad it is working properly now.
