Misfire and catalytic converter damage?

I’ve had my 2001 V70 T5 a few weeks now and on the way home from work this week the engine suddenly started running rough and the check engine light came on. When I got home I pulled the plugs and one was wet with gas so the cylinder appeared completely dead. I recall reading somewhere the coils tend to go bad on these cars so I replaced the coil and sure enough the engine is running smoothly on all 5 cylinders again. One thing I didn’t realize though (as I was driving home on 4 cylinders) was the damage that can be done to the catalytic converter when there is a bad misfire (or no fire at all). I drove the car about 5 miles with the bad coil so now I am hoping I didn’t damage the converter. Does anybody know how much abuse the catalytic converter can be subjected to before permanent damage is done? Everything appears fine now, the engine is running great, no check engine light but I have to believe I didn't do my converter any favors for those 5 miles.

RE: Misfire and catalytic converter damage?

Thanks tech and I'd also like to say thanks for all the valuable information you share on this forum, it is greatly appreciated. When I purchased the used 2001 V70 T5 I knew there were high cost repair risks and I have a limited car budget to work with so I am hoping I can take care of most problems myself. This forum and the information you share can make the difference of me being able to own and drive the car for years to come or giving up on it early because of repair costs. I like the car so much I prefer not to give up on it early and it's good to see there is a lot of good information being shared about the V70s ( as well as other Volvo's). Hopefully I can contribute something useful as I own the car for a longer period of time.
