:) ok so i just bought a 01 volvo v70 with a 2.4l turbo engine im trying to find out what turbo is installed so i can either get info and rebuild or upgrade. Im trying to build a sleeper of sorts. this is my second volvo my first was a 88 740gle back in 2001 and sadly i lost the thing do to stupidity. so now im here

my turbo is leaking oil the guy i bought it off says he had it done 50k kms ago allong with the timing belt heres some pics. Remember im new to turbocharged vehicles and any info on this particular car/turbo setup would be appreciated

make sure its not the oil return line or mounting seals leaking vs the turbo itself. Regarding upgrading, check out ARD Tuning's web site for some ideas. Volvo's use the TDO4 family of turbos - various years/models have different volume capacities as indicated by the number (ie my 850 has a 15G which is bigger than my Gen 1 S40s TD04L-12T. By changing out the turbines, the TD04s gain capacity (ie a 16T can move more air than a 15G). You may be able to see the number on the turbo's part plate but you may need to search by VIN or engine code (should be on a plate under the hood - ie B5244T3 )... So you have a couple ways to upgrade: 1) swap out to a model with a "bigger" turbo. Say you have the TD04HL-14T turbo. You can find another model with the same flange (ie straight or angled - not sure which your year has) and bolt right in. 2) rebuild your turbo. Here you'd use your current housing and waste gate and replace the turbine blades with those from a bigger model ie a 16 or 18... (ARD has a nice video on how to rebuild and sells the parts). Finally, the turbo is only part of the the formula. The ECU controls how much boost the turbo creates so to get the full effect you'd want to reprogram the ECU to allow more boost. With a 16T sized turbo and a new ECU program, you can easily add 50-70 HP.
