Default New to us, 2000 v70xc Questions

We just bought a 2000 v70xc w/142xxx miles. So far we love it.

What is everyone getting for mpg?

My air intake seems quite loud. Is that normal on these cars?

I can hear a grinding/rubbing noise from the right front of the car. The previous owner recently had the brake rotors replaced. I would like to find out what the noise is. Brakes or wheel bearings?

Thanks for your time.

Default New to us 2!

I just purchased my XC70 and so far i'm getting pretty close to 22 mpg. I don't do much city driving, it's basically all Interstate. I didn't think that a turbo AWD could get that good, So i'm pretty excited right now.

Is yours a turbo? That could be the extra noise from underneath your intake.

If previous owner said they changed the rotors I would take a look for myself to see if they did at all and with the correct rotors. I replaced the rotors on my 960 and when I bought the first set for a 95 they gave me the wrong size. To match the exact set of rotors that were previously on, O'reilly's had to pull out rotors for a 96. It's worth taking a look at the pads and rotors. I bought my 960 a year ago and had that grinding noise on my right side also and sure enough the pads were worn down to the base and the rotors were paper thin. Not to mention the brake piston was so far out it took forever to put it back into the drum.

The noise is getting louder now I'm thinking it's the wheel bearings.

Default New noises

Ok, Yesterday the v70 went in for inspection and i told them the noise it was making. They said they would look at it. Meanwhile I priced the hub/ bearing combo at my local volvo dealer, $210. A few hours later the shop called back saying it passed inspection, Ok?. They said there was ice in the wheel making noise. My wife drove it home and said it was making the same noise. So today we took it for a drive. Pulling out of the driveway we heard the same grinding noise as earlier, but once we got on the road we started hearing a howling noise. The kids said it sounded like Dori from Finding Nemo, it does, it sounds like whale song.

Could this be the wheel bearing or could it be coming from the differential.

Has anyone ever heard this noise before?
