programming the DIM / combined instrument panel on a 98 v70
 

So I want to add the trip computer function to my 98 V70 GLT. It looks like there's two options: buy a junkyard DIM that's already got the trip computer enabled and go through the hassle to R/R the dashpad just to get to the DIM, or pay the dealer to log in with the handheld scanner tool and flip the trip computer "on" in the existing DIM. I've already got the "info" switch installed.

Does anyone know just what the procedure is to program the combined instrument panel? My local dealer said he'd have to pull the upper dash to gain access to the instrument panel and that the labor time would make it very expensive - but I'm not sure if he was just blowing me off because he didn't want the job ("I think I've done it a few times before, but that was probabally ten years ago...I'm not sure I'd remember how to do it."). Another said it was a quick fix, but he's 100 miles from me.

So, just where does the tech plug the handheld scanner into? Does it go into the ODB port, like my Draper service light reset tool does? Is there another service port for the handheld scanner tool? Does it really have to be plugged into the back of the DIM?

Is getting the car's PIN a simple/cheap procedure for the tech? Or am I better off just swapping out a junkyard DIM? If swapping in a used DIM, anything to look out for?

I'd prefer to just get the existing DIM reprogrammed, so I could have them set the Service Light interval to 2,500mi and/or 6mos, but I can pick up a used DIM (with close to the same mileage as my car) for around $100.

They just plug into the OBDII plug then access the DIM and change settings.
The PIN # is easy for Volvo to get. They just go into Volvo's computer and it gives you the pin.

Thanks Tech for confirming what I thought about it being programmed through the OBDII.

Now to see if I can get the local dealership to reprogram my DIM (and enable the Trip Computer) for a reasonable rate, now that I know there's no dash R/R labor involved...
