Recurring wheel bearing problem

Hi,

I have a 1998 V70 AWD 5 speed that now has 280,000KM on it and it still runs great except that the left front wheel bearing HUB has been replaced twice already on warranty by Volvo and I am getting the same tire noise again. The RF bearing has never been changed. Is there a surefire way to tell which bearing needs replacing? No appreciable difference when turning either way, noise varies with speed, comes and goes but loudest at 90Km (50MPH)

It seems to be coming from the same LF wheel as before. Is there anything that can be causing this recurring failure of the bearing always on the same wheel?

Thanks in advance

Gil

RE: Recurring wheel bearing problem

Gil,

Not sure if it helps but a couple of years ago I noticed what I thought was a wheel bearing noise on my 99 AWD at 45/50 mph, and was about to persuade the dealer to replace one or both front wheel bearings, until he offered to swap all 4 wheels/tyres just on the off chance. Surprisngly, the noise simply dissappeared when the tyres were changed from the existing Goodyear F1 GSD3 to Pirelli P6000s.

Might be worth a try if not yet tried,

Chris

Thats about what I was going to say. Swap the front tires with the Rears and see if the noise goes away.
If it does then it is the tires.

Also remember you can't just replace 2 tires on the AWD cars you need to replace all 4.

RE: Recurring wheel bearing problem

It will burn up the AWD unit.

It works the same as on a 4X4 truck. The wheels will be spinning differently and it will burn the unit up.

That would be like running 2 different size tires on a 4X4 truck and driving on the road in 4 wheel drive.

What was the result to this problem?

Did you get it fixed byusing new tires or replacing the wheel bearings?
