Should I change coolant
I have a 04 V70 2.4 with 157K. I've owed this car for 9 years and have put about 35K miles on it. I've never flushed the coolant system since the manual stated it was not necessary. I'd like to know if I should leave this alone or flush the coolant system?

After 9 years, who knows what rust and gunk is floating around in there. Coolant should be replaced every 5 years. You should do a fresh water flush (ie run down to Walmart and buy 3-4 gallon jugs of distilled water - not tap water). Drain your system (helps to have a warm engine so the t-stat is open). fill will probably take about 1 1/2 gallons since you never can get a total dry engine) run with the water for 15 minutes, repeat then drain again and refill with correct 50/50 (my 2000 S40 uses the "blue" coolant so I suspect yours is the same color code) Check owners manual or Volvo friendly web stores for the correct class to use. Then you can forget about it for the next 5 years. Also may be a good time to drop in a new thermostat and overflow reservoir cap.

oh and some models have an air bleed valve to help "burp" the system. look for a youtube vid etc to see where it is.

Thank you
I’ll look for that valve. |
