Silly Oil Filter change question; maybe I'm missing something
I ordered a WICK oil filter for my '01 V70 through Amsoil's web site along with my oil. All I received in the filter box was the actual filter element and rubber gasket, and not the entire filter/housing.
I also noticed when I went to order a filter through another site, they showed a picture of the filter element only as the oil filter. Does the V70 have a permanent oil filter housing that you only change the actual paper filter element on? This is my 12th car and I've never seen this before. |

Yup. It's a black plastic cover that screws off the same as a spin-on filter. Be careful not to crack the plastic - it's about $15 for a new one.

Thank you. I was wondering about that. And I assume the plastic cover is an OEM-only part?
Do you need to take the air damn off to change the oil or is the plug right near the filter? I can see it on the bottom of the car but I don't see the plug (but I didn't have alot of light when I checked. Thanks again! |

Cover is OEM-only but you can buy them on the internet here: http://www.eeuroparts.com/Main/PartD...spx?id=1275808. Use a small band wrench to remove it. If you can not get that to work, you can get a wrench here: http://www.eeuroparts.com/Main/PartDetail.aspx?id=A261. You might want to get a new drain plug crush washer just to make sure you have a good seal, available here: http://www.eeuroparts.com/Main/PartD...aspx?id=977751.
On my car the drain plug is in the center rear of the pan. I do have to remove the plasticengine undershieldto get to it. It has 12mm bolts holdingit on. IIRC the drain plug is 17mm. |
RE: Silly Oil Filter change question; maybe I'
I could have sworn the few times I've been under the car I've seen a third-party filter under there. Does anybody make a 1-piece conventional oil filter for our car? I bought it used from a Honda dealership, so I'm hoping they didn't rig something to work, although that seems highly unlikely.

RE: Silly Oil Filter change question; maybe I
I couldn't get the filter housing off. It's just on there too tight. It is a Volvo OEM cover so I'll just buy what I need to get it off the next time and leave the present filter in there.
